... due to a hobby?

I find it intriguing that so many posts talk about 'a hobby' that the poster will not specify as it would be 'outing'.

Surely unless you're one of only a handful of people (tens rather than hundreds) in the country doing said hobby, it's never going to be?

Especially when the hobby turns out to be cycling or golf, something that thousands, or hundreds of thousands, of people do. I could understand it if the hobby was making medieval wind instruments from old engine parts. But golf and cycling? Nah!

WorraLiberty · 16/12/2020 16:08

It's like posters who say they live in another country but won't say which one as it's 'too outing' 🤣

Eifhsg · 16/12/2020 16:11

It means outing to people who know them and will be able to identify them via jigsaw ID. Not outing to every person who reads mumsnet.

“DH’s hobby (think balancing on a board in the sea)”.

Meepmeeep · 16/12/2020 16:16

Yes, I thought i was the only cyclist in my country (too outing to say which one of 4 UK countries I live in.)

This is true. I once found someone I know as they had posted little bits of information that together totally outed them. Bits about family here, bits about a renovation project there, nothing particularly outing but obviously them when you pieced it together. Nothing juicy was ever revealed, and I stopped noticing them eventually (maybe they NC due to their very outing hobbies Grin).

There was a lady the other day who wouldn’t post a link to something like a pair of bog standard mass produced boots or trousers she was considering buying in case that was outing 😂

I do understand that, but even so there would need to be bery few people doing it for it to count

The funny thing is, the people who won't say what dh's hobby is give so much more real outing information. I as'd a goady fucker at the weekend who did a wind em up and watch em go thread and then "has asked us to take this down as she has some privacy concerns" (what she had was a neighbour who had complained about how noisy they were- so unique) but the AS showed where she lived, her job, ages of kids, relationship with in-laws, dental history and favourite brand of tights.

But she was concerned about privacy because she had a neighbour.
Unless she lived with the bloody Dursleys on that rock, she's going to isn't she? Confused

My hobby is bonsai.

We live in a county where the local culinary delicacy is the Clanger, my adult DD used to be a ballet dancer, my DH is a professional musician & guitar teacher, and we have family in the USA.

That little lot will out me to quite a few people. Grin

(all of which information is readily available on here, but not under the same name)
