Quality Street lacking in 'quality' or is it me...

So have thrown in the towel early this week and have just quaffed my first chocs and was less than impressed by the chocolate. I am quite prepared to believe it is just me...not as I remember but my taste buds do seem all over the show generally post-menopause.What is your verdict?

It's really hard to find decent choc nowadays. I've started making my own for special celebrations.

blubberball · 14/12/2020 20:57

Lindt chocolate balls are nice.

The other day, I had a Cadbury chocolate orange snow man. It was bloody nice!

joystir59 · 14/12/2020 20:59

Have bought small amount of very good quality chocolate this year instead of all that cheap shite. Can't abide it any more.

Tomorrowsanewsday · 14/12/2020 21:02

Not Quality Street, but my sister gave me a crunchie one from Heroes. When I put it into my mouth, it was like candle wax, tasteless. It took ages to melt before the chocolate taste came through 🤮

NoZoomAtTheInn · 14/12/2020 21:04

There’s bloody palm oil in all the old favourites -I was horrified when it was added to Toblerone, Terry’s chocolate orange and Ferrero Rocher (sob)

It destroys the Orangutang’s homes and it makes chocolate taste disgusting so WHY oh WHY are they still doing it? Rhetorical question obviously- it’s all about the money and nothing to do with being ethical

nevertrustaherdofcows · 14/12/2020 21:04

fourquenelles --- I ordered my personalized tins on 7 November. Still waiting for some of them, so good luck

mummyof2boys30 · 14/12/2020 21:06

Toffee penny and long toffee fingers my favourite too. Rest just pure rubbish

CopperheadRoad · 14/12/2020 21:14

@AuntyFungal Ingrid Bergman is definitely a Lindt girl 😂

TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 14/12/2020 21:16

M&S chocolates are nice.

I find I have to pay slightly more these days to get nice chocs , and dark chocolate is hitting the spot more - less palm oil? Or might be my taste changing in my old age.

Just had Moser Roth (Aldi 😂) Chilli Dark Chocolate and thoroughly enjoyed it , whereas I know Quality Street, Milk Tray et al would be bitterly disappointing.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 14/12/2020 21:33

We aren't buying Roses or QS this year. They were horrible last year.

YuletidePizza · 14/12/2020 22:50

Agree with pp that m&s chocolate is really nice

Crumbleandcake · 15/12/2020 08:11

They are sugary shit. Hotel Chocolat is much nicer.

FuzzyPuffling · 15/12/2020 08:15

It has never been the same since they removed the red peanut cracknel ones.

Bearnecessity · 15/12/2020 08:31

So the Ferraro rocher in the Christmas stash is also likely to disappoint...this is grim news. This is stealth dieting....how very dare they...I don't remember a red peanut crackle but I love choc with nuts so I feel your pain there.I must try some m and s choc and try and find us a quality alternative....

They tasted like sweet plasticine 2 years ago. I don't eat any mainstream chocolate now. Palm-oil killed it.
Lindt dark only and the occasional red Bounty.

Aprilx · 15/12/2020 08:51

I bought a really big tin this year. I counted out the purple ones and there were four! I didn’t count the green triangles as I don’t particularly like them, but I have noticed there are very few.

Not noticed anything unusual about the chocolate itself.

Simplyunacceptable · 15/12/2020 09:00

Awful. I ordered a tub of celebrations and tub of heroes with the online shop. My DH answered the door and he just says yes to all substitutions because he doesn’t want to be awkward. One of the subs was heroes for quality street, I was absolutely gutted! Hate QS, I’d never buy them.

Notcontent · 15/12/2020 09:05

Most cheap chocolate is really horrible. I guess it makes sense as cocoa is a luxury ingredient and to make cheap chocolate they need to mainly use sugar and cheap fat. I love chocolate to treat myself to small amounts of good quality chocolate.

Lillyhatesjaz · 15/12/2020 09:15

I have made my own chocolate truffles using good quality cooking chocolate and Delia Smiths recipe, they are really good but spoil you for other chocolate. I have not bought tubs of chocolate for years as they all have possible nut traces

SchrodingersImmigrant · 15/12/2020 09:21

@RaspberryCoulis

Cheap shit chocolate, packed with cheap shit palm oil. It's nothing like the Quality Street you remember from the 80s or 90s.

And it's owned by Nestle.

It's owned by Mondelez, not Nestlé. Which is even worse
itssquidstella · 15/12/2020 09:22

I had some last week at work and they were horrid - so sweet they actually made my teeth hurt.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/12/2020 09:59

YANBU. Since they started the 'pile it high, sell it cheap' sales tactic for the big tubs of mixed chocolates, they've all been horrible and not worth the calories.

Controversially, my favourites are toffees, fudge and coconut eclairs (or bounties) and I don't really like any of the others, but inexplicably will eat them anyway, so if I fancy anything like that, I save myself a few quid and a lot of calories and just buy a £1 bag of chocolate eclairs, mixed toffees or a bounty bar or similar.

theDudesmummy · 15/12/2020 10:03

As a child growing up in 1960's/70s South Africa QS were the epitome of "overseas" chocolate: sophisticated, rare, fantastic and very very expensive. Christamanly, if you were lucky. The same went for Maltesers, which I would save my pocket money up for, for weeks.

I would not eat either now, disgustingly sweet and just horrible...both they have changed and I have..

theDudesmummy · 15/12/2020 10:04

Should have said "Christmas only"!

Cailleach · 15/12/2020 10:07

Lidls own brand blocks of chocolate are the only chocolate I'll eat these days.

Cadburys/Quality Street/Galaxy are awful...I really miss Fruit and Nut and Dairy Milk but will never buy them again since they changed the recipes.
