When to do the big Christmas shop?

Hi would it be too early to do it this Friday (19th)?
I'm worried fridge and fresh won't last. Not bothered about frozen or cupboard but would rather it was done in one hit.

When do you do yours?

I have a delivery booked for Friday for all the non-fresh stuff and another for the 23rd for fresh ..... but it's Ocado and they have been rubbish recently so I am sure I will end up going out anyway.

If you're going out, I'd leave it until Monday.

bluechameleon · 14/12/2020 13:18

I think this week is too early, a lot of food won't last that long. I think the 22nd or 23rd would be best, so you have an opportunity to go back or try another shop if something crucial is out of stock.

Simplyunacceptable · 14/12/2020 13:18

My non-fresh stuff was delivered last week and is stashed up in the loft away from the kids Grin.

Fresh stuff is being delivered on the 22nd. I wouldn’t personally bother buying anything fresh before the 21st just incase anything goes off.

bluechameleon · 14/12/2020 13:18

Also Friday is the 18th Smile

Aprilx · 14/12/2020 13:19

I will be getting the things that will last this week. But I will get my vegetables and other things that are best fresher in 23rd. Will be going to the shops, I don’t trust a delivery that close.

SquirtleSquad · 14/12/2020 13:26

I got any frozen stuff this week but all fresh is being delivered on the 23rd so I have time to sort out any missing bits on the 24th if absolutely necessary

isseys4xmastinselcats · 14/12/2020 13:27

I already have the freezer stuff and goodies (ie cake and chocolates ) stashed but wil be doing my fresh and fridge stuff around the 23rd this friday is maybe a tad early

VenusClapTrap · 14/12/2020 13:32

Christmas Eve. We are not so rigid that it matters if they’ve run out of something though. No sprouts? Oh well. We’ll have kale instead.

CeibaTree · 14/12/2020 13:39

We've got a delivery coming on the 20th with most things, we may pop out and get a few vegetables on the 23rd, but anything we don't have by then we'll just do without - I don't fancy the shops on the 24th this year!

Kidssendingmenuts · 14/12/2020 13:41

I've got everything frozen, from the meat to the veg! Did all mine at the weekend x

Megan2018 · 14/12/2020 13:44

Non perishable is coming on 21st, all the fresh is coming early on 24th so I have time to nip out for anything missing.

When we didn’t do online we did it all on 23rd. 19th is far too early for fresh but it is much easier to split it info 2 shops, so do what you can then and a smaller one for fresh later.

Peanutbutterblood · 14/12/2020 13:57

I've been getting my none fresh stuff bit by bit the last few weeks to spread the cost. My delivery this wednesday will have the last of it so I'll have enough ambient to last until after christmas. Next week I've got a delivery on 23rd which will be fresh stuff and anything that is unavailable or substituted ill pop down and get christmas eve if I need to

tinselfest · 14/12/2020 13:59

If you have a shed, garage or outhouse, everything like potatoes, sprouts and root veg will be fine in there for at least a week.

caringcarer · 14/12/2020 14:02

Only delivery slot I could get was 21st. Getting a large shop delivered including potatoes, onions and parsnips but will have to pop out to get turkey crown, sprouts, swede, cream, satsumas and other fruit and milk on 22nf for turkey crown as I'm afraid they will sell out if i.leave it any later and 23rd/24th got rest. I might ask son to get last minute stuff.

movingonup20 · 14/12/2020 14:06

I'm getting the long life stuff on Saturday then fresh on Christmas Eve as per normal, if it's run out we will do without including Turkey

isitsnowingyet · 14/12/2020 14:07

We are having a box delivered from Morrison's on the 23rd. Everything in it for Christmas - it was £50 - and is 'pre-done' by them.

I'll let you know what it was like ....

MrsJonesAndMe · 14/12/2020 14:24

Long life stuff probably on the 20th, fresh stuff about the 22nd.

Megan2018 · 14/12/2020 14:25

@tinselfest not here it doesn’t, despite best efforts of the cats anything outside gets got at by mice. Joys of living in the back of beyond Grin
It was particularly galling in lockdown 1.0 when they got to the chocolate 🤦‍♀️

satnighttakeaway · 14/12/2020 18:26

Why not buy it if the date is long enough, if not get it the next time. You don't need to have any kind of rigid plan do you?

It not like we've got much else to do, te shops are open most hours, get it when it suits you surely.

BrieAndChilli · 14/12/2020 18:31

I’ve been picking up non persuadable stuff over the past few weeks when things have been on offer. Also put some stuff in freezer.
Have started to pick up some cheeses etc that have long enough dates. Will probably pop to farm shop on weekend to get some more cheese and then do the fresh shop at 6am on the 23rd. Anything I can’t get then I’ve got time to pop elsewhere after work.

Ofalltheginjoints · 14/12/2020 18:32

23rd December as we do every year (and have done since being a kid with my parents) it’s a tradition now and mostly consists of collecting the food from M&S and getting the fresh stuff in, already have most of the other stuff, at least I’m on holiday this year so don’t have to be there around 6am to get it done and back home before work

MaverickDanger · 14/12/2020 18:35

I’ve got most of the longlife and freezer stuff already.

Delivery coming on 23rd with fresh and picking up Turkey & veg as well as Christmas Eve food on morning of 24th.

Just hoping this baby arrives this week, and doesn’t scupper my above plans!

Brighterthansunflowers · 14/12/2020 18:36

I think six days ahead is too early, fresh food might be shorter dates

Mine is being delivered on the 23rd, which is close enough not to go out of date but gives me chance to go to the shop for anything that doesn’t turn up

I’ve had a few frozen or cupboard bits delivered in my last few shops though it wont be a disaster if things are missing.

AgeLikeWine · 14/12/2020 18:36

My click & collect slot at Waitrose is booked for 22 December.

Gatehouse77 · 14/12/2020 18:45

I will do the normal shop on Monday and am collecting from M&S on 23rd for Christmas lunch itself. I've picked up a few bits in the last couple of weeks and DH is doing an alcohol shop on Saturday.

We don't entertain much so have never needed to do more than the main meal as the shops are still open when we're likely to need them.
