To not know who the Defence Sec is?

Yes I am being unreasonable.

DH and I were talking about the the current shit show of a situation with gunships being deployed and I could remember who the Secretary of State for Defence was. I had to Google and to be honest I was none the wiser.

There was a time when I could name the whole Cabinet and he Opposition. So without Googling, do you know the name of the Defence Secretary?

No.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 13/12/2020 00:17

No. I can name a fair number of ministers but not that one.

CinnabarRed · 13/12/2020 00:18

Yes

Frazzled2207 · 13/12/2020 00:19

I am fairly sure it used to be Gavin Williamson but he was sacked. And is of course equally useless at the DfE.
I would recognise his face- is def a bloke- but his name escapes men

Neolara · 13/12/2020 00:21

No. And I'm pretty interested in politics.and current affairs.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 13/12/2020 00:21

I Googled. Never heard of that person!

SwedishEdith · 13/12/2020 00:26

I had to check - wouldn't have remembered if a Mastermind question. A remainer who voted for May's deal.

Belindabelle · 13/12/2020 00:35

@Frazzled2207. Yes you are right equally shit at both. What an accolade to have held two of the most prominent positions of state and been crap at both.

I thought it was Penny Mordaunt, didn't realise she got replaced.

thegcatsmother · 13/12/2020 00:57

Ben Wallace iirc (and no, I didn't Google). He's ex Army.

ChinookPilotsGoVertical · 13/12/2020 02:00

Ben Wallace, he's an ex Scots Guards officer.

Rookie93 · 13/12/2020 04:57

Not a clue, and until quite recently worked in Whitehall. Since May went as the PM have totally lost interest in either party and would be hard pushed now to name any of the key players without Google. Depressing shower the lot of them.

Disappointedkoala · 13/12/2020 05:18

No idea. I realised the other day I didn't have clue who the shadow home secretary was. Googled it and I have never heard or seen the guy in my life and I'm very interested in politics/avid news watcher.

WeeWelshWoman · 13/12/2020 06:08

Ben Wallace, but it's been Penny Mourdant and Gavin Williamson recently. Think Gavin was the most recent to hold the title "the disgraced former secretary of state for defence," along with Dr Liam Fox.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 13/12/2020 06:16

no, i didn't, and generally keep abreast of current affairs.

Same process as bunging your mates a few million for procuring gunships when they have no experience beyond being a life coach or being your next door neighbour as when acquiring dodgy PPE?

BobbyBlonde · 13/12/2020 06:20

No idea, and I've worked in Defence for 8 years. Fuck. I've always known who it is but lost track after Penny!

Dee1975 · 13/12/2020 08:03

No. But I doubt he has been in the new at all in the last few months / this year - so why would I know? And why would I need to know as a matter of course?
I prob only know who the health secretary is because he is on the news every other day!

sbhydrogen · 13/12/2020 08:26

No. I've completely lost interest after the general election last year. Like you, I used to be able to name the Cabinet and the Shadow Cabinet. It was a bit of a disappointment to realise that I didn't know who the SoS for Defence was!

Belindabelle · 13/12/2020 10:56

Oh well glad I am not the only one. I fear we may be seeing more of him in the coming months.

nosswith · 13/12/2020 11:23

Ben Wallace. Who served in the military. The only member of the Cabinet I would keep- all the others I would replace even if still a Conservative cabinet.

OwlinaTree · 13/12/2020 11:27

I didn't know. I have a weird one with politicians in that I only listen to the news on radio 4 in the morning, I never watch it on the telly. So I can often talk about what a specific politician had said that week but if you showed me a picture of them I would have no idea who it was!

chomalungma · 13/12/2020 11:36

He's not one of the regulars on the morning round of TV and radio shows.

Or maybe he is.

He hasn't got a 'recognisability' profile unlike Matt Hancock, Priti Patel and Rishi Sunak. Even Grant Shapps and Jenrick are reasonably recognisable.

We need Spitting Image on a mainstream channel again. Not BritBox
