To feel illogically unnerved by this quote

“We know dangerous men walk among us. What we can't be sure of is who they are or where they hide. So the most we can offer any stranger is reasonable doubt. But once the doubt is gone, people are anything but reasonable.”

Sorry for posting this on AIBU but here goes:
I read this last night on a social media meme and I don't know why but reading it gave me a creepy feeling. Anyway I don't really understand the last sentence of it ''But once the doubt is gone, people are anything but reasonable''. Does it mean we trust people too easily ie. the unreasonable doubt being gone means we become unreasonable in trusting them?

Sounds like word salad tbh - trying to be profound but it doesn’t actually make sense.

fitzwilliamsquare · 12/12/2020 21:33

I think it came from the narration of Desperate Housewives, in fairness I always thought her narration was good and quite perceptive.

It's a quote from Desperate Housewives.

jimmyhill · 12/12/2020 21:41

It's completely meaningless

NotStayingIn · 12/12/2020 21:48

Does it mean that once you let people in and trust them, they can then abuse that trust / become unreasonable?

Or, more likely as PP said, it's completely meaningless.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 12/12/2020 21:53

The way I understand it is that once the doubt whether the man is a decent one or not is gone, behaving in a reasonable way towards them is off the table.

fitzwilliamsquare · 12/12/2020 21:56

''The way I understand it is that once the doubt whether the man is a decent one or not is gone, behaving in a reasonable way towards them is off the table.''

I don't get you, how is behaving in a reasonable way towards them gone once your doubt of their character is gone?

Telling them to fuck off, not engaging, calling the police on them, fighting back, shouting ,making a complaint, calling them out for their actions, I don't know .... basically anything that deviates from "put up and shut " or being nice/polite behaviour.

Basically don't expect me to be nice once you've shown yourself to be a dick.

Nerve · 12/12/2020 22:03

It's a quote from Desperate Housewives about people going after a paedophile that lives on the street.

It's crap.

overnightangel · 12/12/2020 22:05

Means fuck all.
Try not to life your life by social media memes

Wandafishcake · 12/12/2020 22:05

I think the lastt bit means thay one people sense you are not going to hold them to account, they becaome very unreasonable.

Wandafishcake · 12/12/2020 22:05

Sorry for all the typos there. You get the gist...

Whatisapension · 12/12/2020 22:05

I think it means once you stop having any doubt and start trusting, you can’t have sound judgement about that person because you only see the person you trust (and ignore if they become dangerous etc)

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 12/12/2020 22:07

@Nerve

It's a quote from Desperate Housewives about people going after a paedophile that lives on the street.

It's crap.

So I was kinda thinking along the right lines.
Whatisapension · 12/12/2020 22:08

So basically, completely trusting anyone isn’t reasonable/sensible

Pyewhacket · 12/12/2020 22:13

It means if you believe what you read on Social Media then you are either gullible or stupid, or both.

lottiegarbanzo · 12/12/2020 22:24

We know some men are bad. We can't tell which ones. So, when meeting a stranger, the best opinion we can offer of them is reasonable doubt. Once we know, that they are bad... [this is where it becomes ambiguous through poor wording] either, their behaviour is shown to be utterly unreasonable, or our behaviour towards them becomes unreasonable (perhaps we become vigilantes).

I think it means that while our doubt is reasonable, the bad people we offer it to are not.

lottiegarbanzo · 12/12/2020 22:30

Oh right, well, given context, the second one. We become vigilantes.

Thewithesarehere · 12/12/2020 22:33

Sorry but it is one of those social media posts that are meant to sound like a lot of wisdom and are basically a lot of BS only. If I were you, I would wipe it off my mind.
