Should I take this job or not?

I've been offered a job as a department head by a former colleague, and cannot decide what to do about it. I'm going round in circles and I need to make a decision by Wednesday at the latest.

I'm currently in a senior position but not department head, I work quite long hours (as is standard for my industry) and the job is stressful sometimes but by and large I know what I'm doing. My current company is supportive and the people are lovely.

I am very risk-averse in general and have passed up opportunities like this in the past. Basically I'm worried that I won't be any good at it and will be stressed feeling out of my depth. Plus I'm not too good when I feel like I'm not doing well-I can become negative quite quickly.

It's a big opportunity (esp as it's a high profile company) and part of me thinks-what the hell, give it a go! And the other part thinks nah you've got it good where you are.

Help!!!! What shall I do?!

You’re going to regret it if you don’t try it. As it’s been offered by a former colleague I suspect it will suit your abilities well.

By your reasoning, you seem happy to stay on this exact salary for the rest of your life. Feel free to do that but be sure you’re choosing it on purpose, don’t just sit there cos you’re scared.

Actually what am I saying, clearly you don’t want this as passionately as other candidates would, so perhaps it’s better if someone else gets the opportunity 🤷‍♀️
