Is 50 hours a week too much for an 11 month old?

If its what you need to work, then its what is needed. Make sure you pick a nursery that you feel aims to develop and nurture your child, has good communication and a robust/sensible criteria for employees, ratios and sickness would be my advice.

Can they walk? Find out if your nursery will take them outside daily if they can't. Mine didn't do this at all in winter if they couldn't walk so I found a childminder for a couple of days instead

No, but I agree, everyone (including non mobile babies) need outside play (preferably free access) every day.

A good friend of mine works in a nursery and she says anything more than 7 hours is too much for children under 5. She says the children clearly get tired and restless after 3 pm or so and it is impossible to provide a sufficiently relaxing environment in a nursery.

On my lunch break from baby room right now. We have some full time babies. They tend to settle quite quickly with being in every day. We're on a farm so we do a trip to the farm each day which includes soft play or the big sandpits if we want. We then go out in the garden for at least one session depending on the weather (we have waterproofs for the babies). In summer we practically live outside! We do craft activities, messy play, lots of singing, stories etc. Our babies seem pretty happy and if they're in every day we get to know them very well.
