How do your pronounce tortoise?

It isn't a word I often use. I don't have one. I rarely see them.

My husband pronounces is tour-tus and I say tour-toy-suh

I've actually googled this and I think I'm wrong?!

Please tell me someone else pronounces it as I do.

Don't get me started on porpoise

@VienneseWhirligig

Tour and tor sound the same in my accent.

Tor-toyce
Porp-uss
Turk-oyse
Nay-oh-me

Agree with the fellow Midlander above about tissue though. Tishoo not tiss-you. Ishoo not iss-you.

Tish-you here so a mix. Porpoyce
FuzzyPuffling · 26/11/2020 08:21

Autocorrect went mad there.

Tortus. Porpus. Turkoiz

HowManyToes · 26/11/2020 08:25

Another Scot here 🙋🏻‍♀️
Tor- toys
Por-pus
Nigh-oh-mi

But my husband takes the piss out if me because I say
ah-pri-cot instead of ape-ri-cot which is annoying good it's my favourite type of jam and it starts the debate every time I have it!

I also say haitch.

Newmumatlast · 26/11/2020 08:27

@user1473878824

puts hard hat on and gets into bunker it’s tor-tus and AICH NOT HAICH.
Lol don't worry I do say aich haha

Tor-toyce. I have 2 so my way is obviously right 😂.

Newmumatlast · 26/11/2020 08:30

@CockleburIck

Another Scot here, so 'tor-toys' for me.

This thread has been pleasingly short on posters saying "But this is the right way, and everyone else is wrong!". The notion that there are regional variations - accents and dialects - all just as valid and correct, finally catching on.

Yes I like that too. I have to say though that when my husband and I were having the debate, I struggled to find an example of a Scot pronunciation of it online though clearly it is regional pronunciation issue here. I reckon people just don't really have cause enough to say it for google to have a video showing me all the ways haha

I say tortuss, but porpoyce. Tortoyce and porpuss sound wrong.

FourTeaFallOut · 26/11/2020 08:31

Tor-toyce

Newmumatlast · 26/11/2020 08:33

@midnightstar66

I've never heard a 'tour' pronunciation. It's either Tor-tis or Tor-toys. I think I say it both ways depending who I'm talking to. (Scottish bit lives abroad a long time so accent changed but switches back when with friends from home)
So I pronounce tor and tour the same...!

ImaSababa · 26/11/2020 08:33

Oh I missed the Naomi bit! My DD is Naomi, and we pronounce it "Nay-oh-mi". Older people tend to say "NAY-uh-mee", and people with stronger regional accents (Lancashire) say "Nigh-oh-me".

JillGoodacre · 26/11/2020 08:34

Tortuss

ErrolTheDragon · 26/11/2020 08:35

Ah, now we're onto rhotic and non-rhotic accents. It's a term which I see on MN far more than IRL!Grin

I pronounce it as you do (Naomi that is)

Funny now I think about it. I say tor-toise for the creature but Tortushell

AlizarinRed · 26/11/2020 08:42

Yes Scots tend to say tor-toicce, por-poice to rhyme with choice. And turquoise.
I'm Scottish I would say toise like toys not like voice

Bloodypunkrockers · 26/11/2020 09:02

I don't think I've heard it pronounced to rhyme with choice

Scotland is a big place though with many different accents. Which part have you heard that in?

tabulahrasa · 26/11/2020 09:10

“So I pronounce tor and tour the same...!”

They sound really different the way I say them, tour has two syllables, lol. But tor is like it and your is like too-r (or if you’re me too-er)

I’m completely thrown by people pronouncing turquoise differently, I knew tortuss and porpuss were a thing, but not turquoise being different.

tabulahrasa · 26/11/2020 09:11

Tor is like t-or that was supposed to say

Felifox · 26/11/2020 09:12

We had a tortoise as children and pronounced it as your dh does. Possibly it's an easier pronunciation when you're a child.

seizethecuttlefish · 26/11/2020 09:12

Tor-toys

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 26/11/2020 09:14

Tortuss

sapnupuas · 26/11/2020 09:19

I don't remember how I say this word anymore!!! 🤯🤯🤯

Pukkatea · 26/11/2020 09:22

My friend calls it a toy-toys and it makes me want to throw things.
