Debenhams Returns Policy - Check if buying for Christmas!

ProudAuntie76 · 18/11/2020 10:27

I work as a nurse in a nursing home so, if the shops do open after 2nd December, I won’t be rushing out to crowded shops to buy Christmas gifts as I’m trying to do all I can to avoid putting my patients and staff at risk and I’m trying to shop online as much as I can.

I bought quite a lot yesterday online for Christmas for my family. Given their age and tastes it’s mainly clothing. Every store I bought from has already implemented their Christmas Gifts Return Policy.

However, I stupidly bought lots from Debenhams WITHOUT checking the policy this year. I’m a store card holder and have done my Christmas shopping with them for decades now and they always have a Christmas policy that you can return unworn/unused items by January.

Not this year!

The policy is currently 28 days. I asked customer services if this meant that if I got to Christmas and the clothing gifts (winter coats etc) didn’t fit would that mean I wouldn’t be able to return and they confirmed that I was correct.

I know it’s AIBU but I’m really just posting as a reminder to check the returns policy in case someone gets stung.

As it is I’m just going to have to return everything straight back when it arrives and find somewhere else to shop as I can’t afford to lose out on all that money if things don’t fit my family or if they get given multiple of the same outfit.

Thanks... I’ve got elderly relatives who are Shielding who’ve been buying gifts from there in the Black Friday sale Sad

That’s quite sneaky of them but I’d see it as a more worrying sign...does this mean they might be going into administration very soon?

EleanorOalike · 18/11/2020 10:41

Sorry just googled and saw that they went into Administration earlier this year Blush. What a shame, it’s not looking good for the staff. Maybe this is a last ditch attempt to flog their stock.

I dont just think its them. My dm was trying to order a coat for my brother from somewhere else but didnt because they dont have an extended returns policy.
Just makes shopping even harder as now I've got various stuff sitting in different baskets but dont want to buy anything yet just in case.

AhoyMeFarties · 18/11/2020 10:59

thanks for the heads up ProudAuntie76

Do you know where the other place is?

So far everywhere else I’ve bought from is still doing the Christmas returns like they do every year. I will check more carefully in future but it’s helpful to know in advance.

I usually get lots of shopping done in October half term! Last year Debenhams covered from 24th October onwards!

Yeah...it could be a sign of it closing. Just hope they don’t do that to their staff at Christmas in such a shitty year and job market.

Couldnt tell you off the top of my head. Might of been blacks or go outdoors, that's where he normally has coats from.

DrManhattan · 18/11/2020 11:07

I wouldn't buy any Debenhams or House of F vouchers!

They've been on the edge for years, hardly surprising as it's such a dire place to shop.

Maybe in your opinion but it’s the only decent shop my town has. In my opinion it’s great for beauty, fragrance, homeware, some electricals, baby and children’s clothing. And in mine there’s lots of different concessions so I never have problems buying clothes from there. I’d rather that than another Primark!

Thanks. It was outdoorsy clothing I’d mainly bought as there were some good deals and we’ve been spending more time outside, so bought some decent waterproof coats etc half price. So might have to avoid Go Outdoors etc when I look for what will replace all this stuff I’m returning while I still can.

Uh-oh...I’ve just bought quite a lot of stuff from there as Christmas gifts as I’m Shielding and I’ve never had a problem with returns before. Levi’s, Fred Perry etc.

Guess that’s all going back then!
