AIBU to buy a grey parka

So not a major life choice but still. I am about to spend £200 on a parka and normally I always buy black coats. However this time I'm thinking of buying light grey or storm grey. Did anyone buy a grey coat and regret it? Black... ages well.... classic. What do you think?

Go for it. I love a non-black coat, and with it being grey, you don't have the added faff of the colour clashing with anything else you're wearing.

I have to declare in slightly biased as I also own a grey parka! Wink

I think it's a bit dull. How old are you? What colour are you? I am a middle aged blonde and this would dull me out. If you are a 30 year old red head, that would look better on you.

flaviaritt · 16/11/2020 14:00

I’d go black or tan. This looks a bit... institutional.

flaviaritt · 16/11/2020 14:00

The lining is beautiful, though.

minipie · 16/11/2020 14:02

I avoid black as it makes me look dead. I bought a greige raincoat a couple of years back as I thought well it’s neutral and not black.... I hate it with a passion, it makes me feel about 82.

Does it come in any other colours OP?

PawPawNoodle · 16/11/2020 14:02

I'm a 30 year old red head and would wear neither of those, both look a bit... pick up at the school gates/taking the dog for a walk on the beach to me. Certainly wouldn't be spending £200 on one either.

I do have a grey coat however and I just wear it when the outfit calls for it. The only black coat I own is a sports waterproof.

vanillandhoney · 16/11/2020 14:15

It looks a bit bland. I do own a grey jacket but it's darker than that.

My concern would be that it would look filthy as soon as it gets wet!

AiryFairyMum · 16/11/2020 14:17

My friend is a fashion buyer and says they are stepping away from grey as the next big neutral will be navy, so if you like it, hold off and it might be in the sale soon?

AiryFairyMum · 16/11/2020 14:18

She helped me choose my coat - lovely bottle green.

AnotherEmma · 16/11/2020 14:26

It depends on your colouring, I think. I quite like the one on the left (where's it from?) and I think it could suit a blonde or redhead. I don't think it would suit me as I'm brunette and look better in navy or strong colours (not black though).

I don't know why everyone is saying it's a boring colour; I find black and navy more boring because they're the colours that everyone has.

Doesntlooklikeanythingtome · 16/11/2020 14:37

Thanks everyone 40s, mixed race so light brown complexion and yes I would be wearing to school gate :)

Lighter grey looks fab with your skin tone, not dark/steel grey though.

PawPawNoodle · 16/11/2020 14:41

In that case I'd go for the first one, the lining is a bit taupey so might go nicely with your complexion and looks a bit warmer

(I didn't mean to be offensive with the school gates comment, just that they look more functional than I'd personally go for)

vanillandhoney · 16/11/2020 14:44

The first one would work for your colouring, I think. My concern would still be that it would show all the dirt and you'll end up washing it all the time!

Only you know if that's an issue with your lifestyle, though.

TheDowagerDuchess · 16/11/2020 14:44

I’d say other way around! I was going to say this coat would suit you if you’ve got fair skin but not if darker.

I’m olive and dark grey (or black, dark green, navy) suit me. Not light greys. I’d imagine you’d be similar.

GreyishDays · 16/11/2020 14:48

Is it one coat or two? Looks different in both pictures. I love it though. Grey is the most fashionable basic atm. Navy has been, a couple of years ago I would say.

Doesntlooklikeanythingtome · 16/11/2020 14:54

Polpotnoodle LOL. I don’t mind ;)

Thanks everyone... I’ll probably just go for black. I’m not a high fashion person but I liked the cut of these coats. It’s more expensive than usual for me but I thought it may have more wear. My current coat has lasted four years but is looking a bit shabby.

Please can you share the link for the first one or tell us where it's from?

Doesntlooklikeanythingtome · 16/11/2020 15:02

Functional mum look with warmth, comfort and built for throwing on, rushing around in and getting wet on excursions.
Two black parkas... open parka is more expensive

Thanks! I like the Poetry one. I did order and return a Protected Species one and was impressed by the quality (returned because it didn't fit/suit me).
