To be fed up with website design - online shopping

I’m sure this has been done before but what the actual fuck has happened to online shopping? Why are they all determined to stop you finding something to buy? I want a filter so I can sort by category and have a browse. And a “sort” so I can rule out anything too expensive or too cheap.
What I don’t want is to be faced with a sea of “collections”, How the heck am I supposed to know what collection the thing I possibly might want is in?
Tonight’s rant set off by wanting to buy my husband a birthday gift. Google says direct from maker (free delivery over £100) or from the Royal Academy ( free delivery over £50). However the website is so wanky I can’t even find the gift that’s in my basket on their website.
I’m trying to find something for £15 to make up the delivery charge. So much harder than you’d imagine. The first page says Gift Guide or Christmas Guide. Helpful. Christmas Guide instead of listing things by “ decorations” or “wrapping” is instead “Joy” “ Northern Star and Santa’s Hat ( although you can’t read the word hat because it’s over something the same text colour).
Not just them,Butler and Wilson is another that has a terrible site. Note; don’t bother with the impossible to remove chat help box and work on the website.
Given the current situation surely someone should notice these are terrible to use.

God, it is an AWFUL site, isnt it? Its even worse than Wayfair. I thought you were exaggerating a bit but its terrible!

Thewinterofdiscontent · 08/11/2020 19:44

Isn’t it? I challenge you to find my husbands gift without putting into the search bar ie just from browsing the website.

It’s a Hori Hori (Japanese garden trowel). Go on. Find the bastard thing.
I gave up and bought it elsewhere.

I found it immediately - started typing 'hori' into their search bar, it was the first direct link that showed up (Niwaki Hori Hori Trowel)

EggysMom · 08/11/2020 19:49

It's in their Eco-Visionary collection. Which is where I'd expect to find a gardening tool.

(Maybe my brain just works on the same wavelength as their website designer's brain)

Thewinterofdiscontent · 08/11/2020 19:52

Yes but the idea is not to type it in because you weren’t supposed to know what you were looking for. Just browse for it.

Where’s the Eco Visionary collection? I only found Lifestyle?

I think the designers all want to show off and come up with something new but at the expense of a usable website. ASOS is good. Arket is the worst clothing one I’ve tried to use. That’s a labyrinth.

whitianga · 08/11/2020 21:51

Was just about to say ASOS is the best, most user friendly site I've come across. But they've started to charge for delivery to Ireland so i don't buy from them anymore.

It seems so rudimentary- build a good website and the people will buy stuff from it

refriedbeanstalk · 08/11/2020 21:56

I'm trying to order ten or so different things from an office supplies website, I had to sign up for an account before it would tell me what the postage was Angry and even though I'm logged in, it deletes everything from my basket if I leave the website AngryConfusedSad

refriedbeanstalk · 08/11/2020 21:57

Oh and you can't sort the results AT ALL, and there are supposed to be filters but they don't do anything.

I also find sainsburys and asda clothing website search impossible and end up going back to google and typing sainsburys girls tights rather than already being on sainsburys website and typing girls tights Confused

I hate the Tesco Ireland website. It's very glitchy. The buttons are way too small and they have products under very random categories. It gives me the rage every Friday night.

Nicketynac · 08/11/2020 22:13

I hate when you type a brand name in the search box and it autocorrects to a "real" word when it is a brand that you know they stock, and occasionally is one of their own brands - looking at you boots.com.
