To be worried about short-term supply teaching and NQT

Hi,
I am a supply teacher in South Wales. In Wales we can complete the NQT on short-term supply, unlike England which requires long-term supply to complete NQT.

I graduated in 2019 and technically I have done supply for 7 months due to the school closures cutting it short.

I have applied for jobs with no success so far I have been completing my supply on short-term.

However, last year I was in a school 2 days a week for 6 weeks and I had my observation sorted in that school ready for March. But sods law, schools ended up closing so the observation obviously could not go ahead.

Flash forward to today and supply is quite slow. I have had a couple of days here and there but usually observations are done in schools you have been to regularly.

I am feel sick from anxiousness about this as my mentor keeps emailing me asking when I will get these observation sorted. However, with coronavirus I can't imagine many schools allowing me to just go in with my mentor to be observed considering many schools are even limiting supply staff/other agencies they let in.

Any advice please?

You need to speak to your mentor and explain the situation, with covid there should be some leeway for nqts to complete theirbhours and observations. Maybe speak to schools you do suply in to see if they would be able to help. Good luck.

Get on to Twitter, use the hashtag #Edutwitter and ask the question. Chances are you’ll have and offer or two from Heads struggling to keep their schools open. Even if you don’t have a twitter account, get one as there is so much advice and support out there for anyone working in education.

I don't know the Welsh system so can't advise, but would suggest you report your thread to MNHQ and ask them to move it into the Staffroom topic. There's probably people there who can give you advice.
