Desogestrel?

Hello,

I've been prescribed Desogestrel as a treatment to very heavy bleeding. I'd like to hear from anyone who took it for this purpose and not as birth control. How long does it take to start working, side effects, what happened when you stopped it, etc. Also, are there any natural alternatives please?

Thanks

I've been on it for a year and a half. First two periods were really light and then haven't bled since. It's been great tbh. I was so anaemic, felt really unwell and couldn't leave the house during a period. My life was changed really quickly for the better. Plan to stay on it long term.

AllBellyandBoobs · 30/10/2020 12:20

My bleeding stopped after a month and I haven't any since then, 4 years now. I had some breakthrough bleeding actually after I forgot to take several pills whilst ill. I took it for very heavy bleeding and PMT rage.

I’m coming to the end of packet 3 now. I suffered from heavy periods-5/6 days every 3 weeks. (Im 46, not menopausal, low iron and B12)

Ive been bleeding most days, nothing major but each toilet visit theres blood on the tissue. Due to start pack 4 next week. I wanted to see the doctor to speak about the bleeding but due to this virus its impossible to see a health professional unless I’m slowly dying.

So ill give another 3 months a chance but if it continues, ill have to see someone.

I take it to regularise my cycle as was suffering from awful anxiety at ovulation (appreciate that this is a bit odd but gp suggested it and it works wonders for me).

I have been on for 8 months now and stopped bleeding after first month.

This information will be in the leaflet which came with it.

I was told to give it 6 months before getting the full benefit.

Bagelsandbrie · 30/10/2020 13:05

I take it because I have heavy clots and anaemia - I think it’s amazing. I have no periods at all on it. I’ve been on it for about 3 years now. Initially
I did have some spotting etc but that settled after a few months. Worth persevering with.

Sheknowsaboutme · 01/11/2020 20:55

Bloody hell😡 ive been bleeding since yesterday. A proper period like it was before I started taking it. Clots too.

This is more of an inconvenience than periods. At least that was a few days. Every wipe is tainted.

WouldBeGood · 01/11/2020 20:59

I’ve been on it for two weeks and my 63, yes, 63 day period has now stopped!!!

Hope I’ve not tempted fate now

InescapableDeath · 01/11/2020 21:01

I had a few breakout bleeds the first few months then my periods stopped. If I forget to take a pill I get spotting a few days after.

Nowtherave · 01/11/2020 21:03

Stick with it because a few months of annoying spotting were worth the payback of never having a single period since!! It's revolutionised my life - no mood swings, no change in libido and no flooding or javelin arse.

Sakuratu · 07/11/2020 10:36

Hi everyone and sorry for not responding earlier.

Thanks so much for your feedback. For those who didn't know why they were bleeding, did you manage to have your condition diagnosed? Or since the bleeding stopped you didn't bother to follow it up?

I’ve struggled with endo and really heavy periods for years, on the combined pill. I was taking Transexamic Acid and Mefanemic Acid every month and periods lasting 10 days. Then I was put onto the PoP due to having an escalation I migraines and it literally solved all my problems! I don’t have any bleeding, cramp or symptoms in general! It’s been a bit of a wonder drug for me to be honest! I worry that I don’t bleed at all, but the positives way outweigh that! Good luck!

Fudgsicles · 07/11/2020 23:25

I bled on that more, not heavy but 10 day periods with shorter gaps in between, 2 weeks by the time I'd had enough then another 10 day period. Also had horrible affect on my moods. Never again! The implant was just has bad, bled almost constantly on it.

Cherrysoup · 07/11/2020 23:30

I utterly love it. I had the coil removed (Mirena) because I was constantly bleeding back in February. I’ve had no bleeding at all. Brilliant.

FarTooMuchWashing · 07/11/2020 23:59

I’ve been on it for about 4 years to control endometriosis, as when I have periods the pain is so bad I can’t release my pelvic wall until I’m absolutely desperate.
I only get bleeding when I’m 3-4 hours late taking it. It’s been a total game changer for me. I won’t come off it till I’m past the menopause (so another 10+ years I reckon).
I also get a headache if I forget it. I rarely forget it now.

Floralnomad · 08/11/2020 00:05

I tried it for heavy periods but ended up bleeding more or less constantly on it albeit smallish amounts for about 7/8 months which was more inconvenient than having the heavy periods . I’m in my mid 50s and have now tried all the non surgical options for heavy periods , when the covid thing has finished I will probably try something surgical as im showing no signs of having a menopause unfortunately.

Hi I've been on microgynon then rigividion for over 15years then hit that magic age of 35!

I ignored docs recommendations and kept on rigividion then finally took the plunge. I'm on desogestrel and first month I was already due my period when I started but second month light spotting, cramps and breast tenderness then nothing for past few days ..I'm usually 34 day cycle, I'm on day 37 am I getting ahead of myself or have I skipped my period? Is it too soon in month 2 to get excited or is this common? Dunno what I was scared of aside from irregular bleeding (bit of a control freak about these things hence why combined worked well for me) ...

My question is at what point do I say that's it til next month?

Thanks guys,
