UPDATE: Stolen Wheelchair from Supermarket

Some updates, but first of all I want to say thank you to everyone who took the time to read the original threat; reply; help; and even send me vicious emails.

We have a few charity shops in close proximity and yesterday DD offered to go and see if they had anything that would prove useful. She sent photos of two, one had fixed wheels and made of steel - DD said it was heavy.

The other was lightweight aluminium, with removable wheels, just needed a new leather/fabric seat as the current one showing normal wear-and-tear. Not a single blemish. I rang the shop to pay over-the-phone along with a nice tip. DD brought it home in a taxi.

It was only on examination, and enlisting Google, we realised this wheelchair retails between £250-£300, and I paid approximately half that, including tip. I managed to take out a loan (they call weekly and the interest is extortionate but planning to pay it off within six weeks anyway). The lady who donated the chair was using her Motability payment for a road scooter as her early-onset RA had started impacting her arms.

It's great to have what has felt like insurmountable pressure lift away, and will look towards a mechanical probably mid 2022, as this will serve us very well indeed.

So thank you, thank you, thank you for your time on my thread. StarStarStarStar (and an extra Star for some, you know who you are).

I hadn't seen the original thread but this sounds awful. So glad you're sorted now op. Just shows although people can be horrible they can be great too. Xx

I am so pleased to hear your update.

A few years ago DD2 broke her ankle. She was 10 and it was just before we were due to go on holiday to Cornwall and although she was quite good on her crutches she tired quickly. So we hired a child’s wheelchair from the Red Cross. One day we were pootling around in a charity shop in Wadebridge and DD went in on her crutches and we left the wheelchair outside. As we left the shop we came upon a perfectly respectable looking couple trying to make off with this child’s wheelchair. When we challenged them they just shrugged and walked away.

I cannot fathom the depths to which some people will stoop. I’m glad things are looking up a bit for you OP.

Hi. So sorry you had to resort to taking out a loan at high interest rates. If anyone else is reading this in a similar situation and/or you find yourself in a similar situation it is worth trying your local CITIZENS ADVICE or local council WELFARE SUPPORT line. They may know if local charities/foundations who could loan you the money or indeed just gift it. Not every area has these facilities but it may be worth a shot. Good luck OP.

I saw but don't think I posted on the original thread.
Did people send you vicious emails or was that an autocorrect failure??

PerkingFaintly · 30/10/2020 13:14

Oh thank god for that! I was horrified at that thread, and what the theft meant for you.

Sounds like a really decent chair!

Also, thank you for warning the rest of us about it. I've felt like a drama queen worrying about wheelchair theft before, but will be bike-locking all my kit from now – removeable wheels and all.

No mis-typing. Some people went onto the GFM page to send me hate-mail. Clever enough to not DM me on here for fear of being reported.

Still 99.9% of people have been utterly fantastic, the other 0.1% fuck-em.

Sorry @MNHQ for your having to remove some of my posts (and then the complete thread). Very, very sorry BlushBlushBlush

I was a scammer trying to steal people's money and they hoped I learnt what it was like to actually need a wheelchair was one example...

Ahhhhhhhhh yes I clearly remember the gofundme link in th middle of your post

SoddingWeddings · 30/10/2020 19:01

@SimplySteveRedux the loan sounds more like a loan shark than a legit outfit. Please be careful.

Mummyoflittledragon · 30/10/2020 19:50

I’m so pleased you’re mobile again. What happened to you was awful. Flowers

There are doorstep loan providers who work this way that are operating perfectly legitimately. Not ideal in terms of the high interest rates they charge, but it is what it is in a time of need.

I'm glad you got sorted OP.

Yep, will be paid off before Christmas. The APR is 1349%!! Don't want that around my neck for too long! But still, a convenient and fast solution.
