I suspect I’m being irritable if not unreasonable.

Had phone parent’s appointment with my child’s (third child, not pfb, eldest twenty,? so not a stranger to school parent’s evenings) reception teacher. She was very pleasant. But consistently called me “my lovely” throughout the appointment and twice said “yes exactly, bless you”.

I found this irritating and patronising. She is at least fifteen years younger than me but I would have found it irritating if she were twenty years older.

I’m being an irritable old cow aren’t I?

I have never met this person except for socially distanced handover at school gates about eight times. She doesn’t know if I’m lovely 😂

Also I don’t know how a question mark got in there after my eldest son’s age. I do know he is twenty!

I would be extremely irritated by this. You are not 'her lovely', nor are you to be verbally patted on the head like you're a dear wee dot who has caught on to the bleeding obvious. That's very unprofessional.

I hate that shit, too. YANBU.

Is she very recently qualified? She seems to have perhaps forgotten how to talk to adults not 4-5 year olds. Bless her.

CathyTre · 22/10/2020 19:15

Actually she is recently qualified, but I was once an nqt (I am not currently a teacher) and I don’t think I ever did this. Well I know I didn’t because I just don’t talk to adults like that but that’s not to say no one does.

I mean, it’s not a massive deal or anything. Just irritating!

I would imagine it’s from teaching kids all day!! I find it very hard to get out of ‘work voice’ where I talk to kids with S&L issues all day and to remember that their parents aren’t 7. So whilst I feel your irritation, try not to take it personally.

I think, when you spend all day taking overly nicely to small children, it creeps onto the rest of your life. I work with under 3s with SEND and the other day I praised my 11 year old DS with ‘good hitting!’ when we were playing cricket 😂
