To think if this is a scam it's not a very clever one

I got a friend request on face book yesterday from a man I don't know claiming to be from Rome.

A couple of photos: good looking, piecing blue eyes, beard and grey/white hair, there's even a 'cute' one with a puppy; oh and a slightly fuzzy picture of a young child; clearly covering all bases.

I've never watch any of the tv programmes he presents, and I know absolutely nothing about him, but even I can recognise old photos of Paul Hollywood.

Seriously if you're attempting to lure women in and scam money out of them at some future date - after you've declared your undying love of course - wouldn't you have to be incredibly stupid to use images of one of the most high profile faces on tv in the country in which you're doing your scamming.

Time to change my fb settings I think.

I get random men start following me on Instagram. I only post about things I sew or knit (and follow similar people) with the occasional landscape when I'm away. They usually have one photo either leaning on a car or holding a dog. Unless they have photos of what they've knitted I just block them.

Or you could do what Daisy May Cooper did.

Sure it wasn't actually Paul Hollywood? He is a bit of a lech apparently. . .

sapnupuas · 16/10/2020 12:09

Let's see the photos.

They do this on purpose. They know if they fall for the pictures and the bad spelling and grammar they are easily duped and and an easy target

I’d be the remotes to play along. Say you are holly willoughby.

Stompythedinosaur · 16/10/2020 12:30

I've read that some scams are deliberately poor with the intention of only getting responses from people who maybe struggle cognitively or are more gullible. The example given was scam emails with deliberate misspellings that only want responses from people who can't spot them.

Ah yes, that did occur to me: changing his name and pretending to be living in Rome, just so he could get to know me.

And then I thought, nah! Grin

God, they're even lower scum than I thought.

sapnupuas I would post the photos but I'm not actually sure how to get them from fb to here.

It was definitely Paul Hollywood. I Googled him and two of the photos were identical, although, I couldn't see the one with the puppy.

I once got a message from ‘Ben affleck’ on Instagram. Apparently he only used that account when he wanted to be under the radar, and that’s why he didn’t have many followers and wasn’t verified Grin

Apparently the Prince of Saudi does the same, so he told me 😂
Coldemort · 16/10/2020 13:03

I had an Instagram message once from a middle eastern Prince (with 10 followers).
Had a whale of a time asking him what sort of prince he was. Started sending pictures of royal princes (William), then celebrities (Prince Nassim), then sent a picture of princes tuna.
Readers.. he blocked me

DrivingMo · 16/10/2020 13:06

I've been accused of photoshopping pictures of me with a picture of a young celebrity before. It was just a picture of me and my husband. haha

Ah. I just really wanted to see the PH puppy photo.

Swoon.

There was a well known case of a woman being duped by someone pretending to be a famous Hollywood actor (I forget which one) and he was telling her he needed money to finish his movie but once it was complete, he’d come and visit her to say thanks! She was fleeced out of several thousands of pounds. Very sad.

ravenmum · 16/10/2020 13:21

I've never heard of Paul Hollywood and have no clue what he looks like, so it could have worked on me!
