What happens if you don't take ADs for a few days?

My partner has forgotten to order his ADs and used his last one on Friday. He's on citalopram.

The earliest he can get his pills will be Tuesday afternoon. Will he feel the effect of going without for nearly four days? How can I help him?

I take alprozalam for anxiety but it's on an "as and when" needed basis. How much does he normally take a day, and how long has he been on it?

Ohalrightthen · 11/10/2020 10:40

I used to start withdrawing on about day 3. Nausea, headaches, chills etc. More physical than mental to begin with

Pieceofpurplesky · 11/10/2020 10:40

I am on citalapran and would be feeling really anxious by then. I once forgot to take them for a weekend away and was a ball of tears and anxiety by the third day

AKissAndASmile · 11/10/2020 10:40

Phone 111. They'll organise an emergency supply for him.

BingityBongity · 11/10/2020 10:41

I don't know how much he takes- it's one tablet, and I think it's a higher than average dose, as he has tried to cut down before but felt worse. He's been on it for 4 years- this is the first time he's properly run out.

I suffer withdrawal. Feel confused anxious, sweaty, dizzy in head generaly unwell its not nice. I would try 111.

NerrSnerr · 11/10/2020 10:44

I agree with calling 111 to get a prescription to see him through until Tuesday. It's likely he'll be feeling awful by Monday evening/ Tuesday.

1990shopefulftm · 11/10/2020 10:44

He could try calling his usual pharmacy, they might be able to give him 2 tablets for now. In certain areas 111 can send over a form so that they can supply him with a bit more than that for now.

GoldfishParade · 11/10/2020 10:44

Well I'm on the lowest possible dose so I have no symptoms. I haven't taken mine in 2 weeks and feel fine.

If you are saying that he has had problems simply by LOWERING his dose in the past, and the situation now is that he has none and will be going cold Turkey, then this is a problem.

BingityBongity · 11/10/2020 10:49

Thank you for your quick replies, everyone. We'll try 111, as our usual chemist isn't open on a Sunday.

I usually get a thing called ‘head zaps’ when I don’t have mine for a while. It’s hard to explain but it sort of feels like a mini shock in your head and I feel a bit woozy and dizzy. If you ring OOH they should be able to an emergency few days

MrsMigginsPie · 11/10/2020 10:56

After 48h with no citalopram I start feeling quite nauseous. Feels like being motion sick. Goes within an hour after I take a pill! His usual chemist should be able to give him an emergency supply but I think they generally need to contact the GP first - so 111 might be your best bet. Although he might have to wait until Monday (I went to a walk in clinic to try and a prescription at the weekend, but they wouldn’t prescribe as it wasn’t an emergency. Not sure if 111 would think the same?)

heidbuttsupper · 11/10/2020 11:11

@OwlBeThere head zaps here too, they are awful and the reason I can't come off them

movingonup20 · 11/10/2020 11:39

If he goes to the pharmacy today he can get an emergency supply. Dp does this frequently!

movingonup20 · 11/10/2020 11:42

Ps dd took citalopram and ended up in a&e when she suddenly stopped taking them (5 days later) she was close to being sectioned. She's not an easy young person to parent!

Casschops · 11/10/2020 12:55

I can tell when my husband misses one or two days as he can genuinely forget. He gets quite irritable which is not his normal style.

MrsVeryTired · 11/10/2020 12:58

If he takes a copy of his repeat prescription sheet to any pharmacy he should be able to get an emergency supply (might have to pay).

36pregnant · 11/10/2020 13:10

Go to usual chemist. They can sort him with a short term supply.
