Shampoo/conditioner on dyed hair...

unknownn · 10/10/2020 17:56

To ask whether you use colour protect shampoos/conditioner for your dyed hair? Just started dying my hair and my hairdresser says it's so important to use colour protect hair products - otherwise hair will be stripped of colour. Is this what everyone does that dyes their hair... surely there'd be more selection of colour protect products on the shelves if this were the case Confused

I do find it fades much quicker when you don’t. I have my hair dyed a few shades darker and some highlights once in a while and it lacks oomf if I don’t use colour stuff and I find my highlights start feeling a little brassy.

DueNumberTwo · 10/10/2020 18:11

There are tonnes of shampoos and conditioners for coloured hair. Most brands will have that option.

slashlover · 10/10/2020 18:16

What brand are you buying that doesn't have a variety for coloured hair?

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 10/10/2020 18:19

Where are you shopping that there isn't a massive selection? Confused
I always use colour protect products when my hair is dyed. Currently its bleached blonde so I'm using purple products.

vanillandhoney · 10/10/2020 18:24

I don't think there are many brands out there that don't have an option for coloured hair.

I've used Herbal Essences, Aussie, Tresseme, Pantene and Garnier before, and that's just off the top of my head.

Where are you shopping that you don't see that?

MajesticWhine · 10/10/2020 18:31

Yes I nearly always buy colour protect products.

LagunaBubbles · 10/10/2020 18:38

There is! Confused

Every single brand I've used has a colour product eg Herbal Essences, Pantene, Tresemme, Vo5 and my favourite Elvive.

Lazypuppy · 10/10/2020 18:38

Literally every brand has a colour protect version...

spanieleyes · 10/10/2020 18:41

I like the smell of Tigi Bedhead dumb blonde!

CakeGirl2020 · 10/10/2020 18:44

Well if it’s not shampoo/conditioner for dyed hair, it will strip the colour out. If you want the dye to keep looking good then yes you need to use it for dyed hair.

Pretty much every brand has a coloured hair version. I really rate the brand Aussie.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 10/10/2020 18:44

was she trying to flog salon stuff, or generally recommending what to buy elsewhere?

unknownn · 10/10/2020 18:54

Either my local Superdrug / Tesco is always out of stock or I am blind lol! The ones I find are such boring scents - I love the wide selection of smells with other shampoo/conditioners. Maybe I'll look elsewhere or online.

@EveryDayIsADuvetDay I'm not sure really. I am always skeptical of my salon as they're always trying flog extras or convince me I need things I don't. That's why I wanted to check on here incase she was trying anything Grin

The L'Oréal red one is nice

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 10/10/2020 19:08

As others have said, there are plenty of supermarket/high street options available. - sounds like you escaped without being fleeced £20+ for a bottle of shampoo Grin
Superdrug have a free order and collect service - have a google and sort out what you want in advance.

britnay · 10/10/2020 19:12

I like the Directions ones

ZolaGrey · 10/10/2020 19:23

Things like head and shoulders will strip your colour. Yes, you should be using protective ones, the dye job is a bit of a waste of money if you're not going to maintain it. Olaplex is good but not the cheapest.

Whatup · 10/10/2020 19:39

Poundland normally have a massive selection of shampoos and conditioners. Just don't bother with the hair dye. Or the own brand make up.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 10/10/2020 20:00

I’m going to go against the grain here! I’ve been dying my hair for more years than I can remember but I’ve always found colour protect shampoos make my hair lank. So I just use baby shampoo (I like Superdrug’s) or Aveda’s Shampure which has the bonus of smelling divine. I haven’t noticed particularly bad fading, but then I use bright colours which will fade anyway.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 10/10/2020 20:41

@Whatup - poundland liquid eyeliner is brilliant! Anything else I've tried is rubbish, but the eyeliner is seriously good.

36pregnant · 11/10/2020 00:48

Stop using shampoo and your colour will last

user1473878824 · 11/10/2020 01:36

@BrightYellowDaffodil that’s really interesting because baby shampoos are meant to, and I have found, fade dye massively because there is nothing in them to keep dye in your hair.

Florencex · 11/10/2020 01:43

I have been dying my hair for about twenty years now. I sometimes use shampoo for dyed hair but it isn’t something I consider essential. There are usually other features of a shampoo I am more interested in ahead of the colour protection.
