Do you iron non-iron shirts?

Wnikat · 08/10/2020 20:28

Bloody school shirts. I have bought non iron ones. I hang them up damp. They look ok. Not perfectly crease free but they person who is going to wear them is 5 years old so WHO CARES. My husband apparently. He says they ‘need to be ironed’. By which he means he thinks I should iron them.

Leaving aside the fact that if he wanted a wife who ironed things he should have married his mother, surely the whole point of non iron shirts is too don’t have to iron the bloody things.

AIBU?
YABU - yes, your little darling must go to school wearing a freshly ironed shirt
YANBU - they’re called non iron shirts for a reason, go to bed and stare at Mumsnet on your phone

Once you iron a non-iron shirt then you have to iron it forever more.....

Wash them with a really small wash. Do not tumble dry. Shake and hang immediately and they should be fine.

ExclamationPerfume · 08/10/2020 20:32

They go in the tumble drier and come out pretty crease free.

TooMinty · 08/10/2020 20:40

I don't iron anything ever if I can help it. Don't bother and if your husband cares that much he can do it.

InTheLongGrass · 08/10/2020 20:48

Yeah, I do.
And school poloshirts.
And DHs work shirts.
Thats all I do iron tho.

DappledThings · 08/10/2020 20:54

I iron everything bar towels and underwear. It is neither reasonable or unreasonable to iron non-iron shirts. It is very unreasonable for your husband to tell you they need ironing and not just do it himself.

Velocity · 08/10/2020 20:58

My DH has worn mom iron shirts for years. As soon as they are out of the wash put them on hangers to dry. Job done. We don't have a dryer. Game changer.

SaucyHorse · 08/10/2020 20:59

The only thing I iron is my children's Hama bead creations. He can do it himself surely if it bothers him so much?

AriettyHomily · 08/10/2020 21:01

No. Smooth and hang, no creases.

Whatsissname · 08/10/2020 21:01

Oh. Are you supposed to actually use an iron? I thought they were just for show. Mine is still in its cardboard box Grin

CoRhona · 08/10/2020 21:11

No way. I wash shirts on the lowest spin setting and hang them straight up, never use the iron.

Theterrible42s · 08/10/2020 21:12

I don't iron anything, ever.

lighthouseinthesnow · 08/10/2020 21:14

Yes I do but plenty of people don't. It's no big deal. If your DH is so worried he can do it himself.

Sheepareawesome · 08/10/2020 21:17

Dh irons the boys' school shirts as he likes ironed shirts. I do not care so I don't. If your dh wants them ironed he can do them.

Irre247 · 08/10/2020 21:17

I iron the minimum possible. I tumble dry non iron shirts and they look fine. More to life than being crease free. He can iron them if he’s that bothered!

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 08/10/2020 21:19

@Theterrible42s

I don't iron anything, ever.
me neither.
Allgirlskidsanddogs · 08/10/2020 21:19

Non iron means don’t iron to me. Wash, tumblr, take out when warm, give a good shake and fold immediately, then I put them out on the radiator the night before they will be worn and hope that will deal with any remaining creases.

If that isn’t enough for DH tell him to do it himself!

speakout · 08/10/2020 21:23

I don't see the problem.

Oh wants the shirts ironed and you are not stopping him. What is the AIBU?

I don't own an iron btw. Evil device invented to keep women busy and out of politics.

Zeebeezee · 08/10/2020 21:24

Would your kids school make a complaint about non ironed school shirts?

I very much doubt it. Cleanliness is the important thing and I know you observe that.

Forget about DH, if he feels they should be ironed, he can do it. So bloody obvious. Don't be bullied by a sideliner giving instructions to the maid!

picklecustard · 08/10/2020 21:25

The thing is once they’ve worn them for ten minutes a lot of the remaining creases are completely gone, I think body heat irons out clothes.

I used to waste so much time ironing everything and I’ve since realised so much really doesn’t need to be.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 08/10/2020 21:25

I iron nothing. Ever Smile

BackforGood · 08/10/2020 21:31

The clue is in the name.

Plus, they are 5 and presumably wearing a jumper / sweatshirt / cardigan on top when they set off in the morning

Personally, I don't iron unless I'm off to an interview or a wedding.

If your dh has a 'thing' about it, then he can obviously do that for them himself.

weegiemum · 08/10/2020 21:35

I iron for weddings and funerals. I most recently ironed over 3 years ago when dh was a witness in court. He has a great selection of non-iron tips and shirts for work (GP - so not allowed to wear a tie for infection control purposes).

When I did get the ironing board out for my Gran's funeral, dd2 asked what the "funny long table" was for!

vanillandhoney · 08/10/2020 21:35

I've never ironed a thing in my life. Don't intend to start now Wink

lovablequalities · 08/10/2020 21:35

Dude, I don't iron stuff that NEEDS ironed much less stuff that doesn't.

If he feels that strongly about it then he can do it. 🤷‍♀️

happymummy12345 · 08/10/2020 21:40

I iron everything except socks and bras as I hate un ironed clothes
