Sickly sweet smell (ketone)

Anonymous555 · 06/10/2020 00:48

Posting for traffic. Just woke up to DS14 screaming in pain with cramp in his lower leg. He's not a dramatic kid at all. Thought nothing of it til I got closer and distinctly smelled ketones. He's complained of nausea on and off the past fortnight. No family history of diabetes. What else could it be?
For context, my goddaughter is type 1 diabetic, I know what excessive ketones smell like.

Sounds like diabetes. I'd take him to A&E OP

alexdgr8 · 06/10/2020 02:20

at least ring 111.
good luck.

Susannahmoody · 06/10/2020 02:25

Def 111

SeaToSki · 06/10/2020 02:30

Call for medical advice and if you dont get any within the hour, go to A and E

octoberfarm · 06/10/2020 02:48

Both my son and I have T1D - I'd go straight to A&E. So much better safe than sorry. Wishing you all the best, OP.

Leaannb · 06/10/2020 02:55

A&E....NOW

OldGreyBoots · 06/10/2020 02:57

Don't need a family history of T1 to have diabetes! Trust me, I don't, but have it. I hope you've contacted emergency services and not just mumsnet!

Pixxie7 · 06/10/2020 03:28

Ketones on the breath is type 1 diabetes unless on a ketone diet.

eggofmantumbi · 06/10/2020 04:14

A&E. When I was diagnosed I was told it was lucky I hadn't waited any more time, and I was an adult. Please just go. X

alexdgr8 · 06/10/2020 04:17

please let us now how you all are.

blueberrypie0112 · 06/10/2020 04:22

I have work with resident with diabetes, they always had sweet smell to them. You are right to be concern

honeyytoast · 06/10/2020 04:37

Good luck💘

rorosemary · 06/10/2020 04:37

No family history of diabetes

T1 doesn't tend to run in families that much. It happens, but statiscally most don't have it in the family.

Don't wait with diagnosibg T1. It can kill quite quickly.

yelyah22 · 06/10/2020 06:16

Hope he's okay, OP.

NameXForThis · 06/10/2020 06:22

My DC was diagnosed recently with Accelerated Starvation Syndrome (ketotic hypoglycaemia). Ketones smell on the breath (together with multiple other symptoms) with the absence of diabetes.
My thoughts are with you - and your dc.

LUZON · 06/10/2020 08:07

That sounds worrying.

eggofmantumbi · 07/10/2020 08:08

Op how is he today?

frazzledquaver · 07/10/2020 19:31

Hope you are ok. Let us know how you got on and I'm sure there are lots of us on here who can support you/point you in the direction of support if your DS has a type one diagnosis.

Sorry for the delay. Called 101 while I posted. They advised contacting GP. Called GP next day, can't get a blood test til 22/10. Checked his blood sugar myself and it was fine. He's dr9lots if water a day and has been fine so far.

111 drinking

When you say drinking lots of water do you mean excessively? I’d be wanting an OOH GP appointment for him, or at least demand an appointment Monday. Face to face, don’t accept the Covid excuse, because they definitely are seeing patients when needed. (Ambulance staff)

paddyclampitt · 09/10/2020 23:21

I have T1 diabetes so I get why people are concerned about the ketones. BUT it's also possible to get ketones if you've not been eating properly, especially if low on carbohydrate!

Do you usually keep your Goddaughter's testing kit, lancets and strips at your house?
Anonymous555 · 10/10/2020 01:34

@MitziK of course I do. She depends a lot of time here.
@RayOfSunshine2013 I made him drink it. He's not overly thirsty
@paddyclampitt he had done cross country running in an empty stomach same day
