Help! I’m going to go bald. My hair is falling out in clumps

My hair is falling out massively. I had huge clumps of hair in the plug hole after washing my hair and then when I combed it so much fell out in my hands. I just have to touch my hair and clumps come out. There hair everywhere on the floor. I had a baby 4 months ago. Surely this amount of hair loss is not normal? Aibu to think I’m going to go bald?? I have a doctors appointment for it next week.

@S111n20 hi there! It’s still falling out a lot but no bald patches yet. It might be slowing down now but I still get a lot of hair in my hairbrush and on my baby!!! I’ve just kind of accepted it and hope it grows back eventually. I feel like I must have lost 50% of my hair by now!! I saw the doctor and he diagnosed me with telogen effluvium as well. He said to look at the ends of the hair and if it had a little white bulb it’s telogen effluvium. I had a blood test to check my thyroid and it was all normal. No anaemia either. I also had my hair dyed at the hairdresser the day before it started to fall out! Coincidence or not? Hmm glad yours is growing back now! Seeing all that hair is pretty depressing isn’t it! I just try not to think about it too much.

It’s normal as others said.

Have you tried using fermented rice water? If not, soak rice over night and dispense the water into a spray bottle. I usually add a few drops of essential oils, as it can be quite smelly. After washing your hair, spray the rice water onto your scalp and massage it, leave this in and style as usual.

You’ll find that this will help the hair loss, as the nutrients in the rice water assist in this (and apparently slow grey growth down).

And BTW, I’ve been doing this myself and it’s working for me!

Similar happened for me with 2 DC. I'm lucky that I have thick hair but it was scary first time round. I highly recommend taking a vitamin and mineral supplement especially if bf

I’ve heard rice water is supposed to be good. Unfortunately @Peridotty you are in the thick of it at the minute but it does slow down. For me I didn’t realise for a while it was slowing because I was looking at every hair which Is probably the worst thing I could do. I don’t know if it helps but from speaking to others going through the same, I wash my hair once a week as that’s when I loose the most I also use a wide tooth comb to brush.

Sorry to tell you OP that I ended up with two bald patches on both temples post birth. I couldn’t wear my hair tied back for about six months! Now I have two lovely sticky-outy-tuffty bits which are slowly slowly growing back. DD is 15 months now. It’s slow progress!

lidoshuffle · 21/11/2020 11:04

The same is happening with me. No baby, but an operation four months ago. Apparently anaesthetic sets off the telogen effluvium.

It's quite scary and I don't want to cook for anyone because I'm finding hair everywhere!

I've taken an organic silica supplement before for hair loss, it actually seemed to help, but my hair loss was from chronic illness so it never grew back completely. I have no idea if you can take it while breastfeeding so definitely check that before trying it.

I just wanted to update you all and let those mums who are experiencing the same thing that my hair did grow back!! It started growing back at around 7 months after childbirth and its sticking up everywhere. My parting is not as visible and the hair loss has stopped (just normal now when I take a shower). I didn’t use any supplements or did anything special!

Baby four months ago: yes, totally normal. Plus I expect you haven't had your hair cut for a few months so the ends will be a bit dry and tangly? Hair falls out so much after birth but it is all the hair you retained over months of your pregnancy falling out at once.

Ah, should have rtft!
