AIBU to be angry with this comment in the Daily Mash?

Priti Patel the "obese-from-the-neck-down home secretary"
link

I (usually) love the Daily Mash. I read it every day. It may not be to everyone's taste but imho it's the best satirical site out there.

And I loathe Priti Patel, so nothing to do with her per se. I just think the quote is genuinely nasty and unnecessary.

I am not the type to be offended by things. I never write in to anything to complain. But am tempted to, this time. AIBU?

The comment added nothing to the article and seems unnecessary. I think the daily mash is better than this usually.

Varjakpaw · 07/09/2020 16:49

I expect better of them tbh. I loath everything she does and stands up for but I’m sure they have not made a similar comment about a male cabinet member.

christmastreewithhairyfairy · 07/09/2020 16:54

exactly! they are usually much funnier than that and I also wondered if they'd say the same about a man

Did they mean from the neck up? Some sort of comment on her intelligence?

SerendipityJane · 07/09/2020 17:29

If you want to complain, complain.

If you don't want to complain, don't.

By all means ask peoples opinions - even have a poll.

But why do you need the approval of others to complain ? I can assure you I don't.

Here is your medal for being such a perfect human being! apart from completely missing the point of AIBU

Absolutely right OP. How dare a satirical website mock powerful politicians in such a cruel manner.

Bring back the good old days when spitting image mocked politicians in a respectful way- they would never have mocked a politician's appearance.

No one has ever mocked Boris Johnson or Donald Trump's appearance.

But why do you need the approval of others to complain?

Because true moral courage is about taking a stand with a mob behind you. What's the point in being offended if you don't shout about it?

This. Nobody posts on AIBU to be told they are wrong. That's just rude.

ChaChaCha2012 · 08/09/2020 11:08

Given how vile she is to so many groups of people, I'd say she's fair game for any (non threatening) comments. She is a very strange shape, it's the same as pointing out that Sunak looks like a small boy in grown ups clothes.

powershowerforanhour · 08/09/2020 11:24

I can assure you I don't.

Er...why are you assuring OP about this? Do you need her approval/agreement that your thoughts and behaviours aren't hypocritical? Odd.

Anyhow, on the original subject, I thought it was a strange thing to mock. Are they so annoyed that she has good cheekbones and is nice looking and well groomed? There's plenty about her politics and attitude to slate (which they have) without jumping up and down and pointing , "She's a bit fat you know!!" Is "fat and ugly"- especially in relation to women- such an inseparable word pairing in their heads that "fat and pretty" evokes a response of derision like it's really unnatural and freaky or something?

unmarkedbythat · 08/09/2020 11:51

I despise her. I don't think she's fit for office and as an individual everything I know about her points to her being vile. I would like to see her career ended, her reputation wrecked and her name become a byword for embarrassing failure.

That said, I agree. There is so much to criticise this awful human being for, why be the sort of wanker who laughs at her body? What has her weight and shape got to do with the fact that she is a walking piece of shit?

Crankley · 08/09/2020 16:06

I like Priti Patel and think she does a good job.

It's the usual made up rubbish - they wouldn't know a journalist if they saw one. I'm pretty sure she won't give a fuck. Worse things have been said about her on here.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 08/09/2020 16:09

I think this is really awful. Many Asian people like me are very apple shaped, and put on weight around the waist. I am the same shape as her. I can’t stand Priti Patel, but how on Earth is this relevant to her role. It’s not to my job.

TooTrueToBeGood · 08/09/2020 16:12

Given how vile she is to so many groups of people, I'd say she's fair game for any (non threatening) comments.

To quote Michelle Obama, "when they go low, we go high". I am no fan of Priti Patel but taking cheap shots at her physique is unnecessary and sets an example that is indefensible in this day and age, regardless of what one thinks of her as a politician.

JamieLeeCurtains · 08/09/2020 16:15

It suppose it might be an allusion to her alleged 'work' on her bonce. Dunno.

Violetparis · 08/09/2020 16:28

Satire has always mocked the appearance of politician's, Boris and Trump have been mocked many times for their weight.
