To not want to buy this uniform

DS (year 11) goes back to school tomorrow and I got an email at 5pm today saying that, because of there being no access to changing rooms, all students need to attend in PE kit on a day they have PE. Fine, no problem there, except that they're now saying they should wear the (optional) fleece and joggers rather than the shorts and polo shirt. DS has never had these items, and I really don't want to spend the best part of £60 on 2 garments he'll wear one day a week for 2 terms - even assuming we get to next Easter without any school closures.

AIBU to contact school and see if they'll accept plain navy joggers and fleece (I believe the school ones have white piping on the joggers and light blue side panels on the fleece so not a million miles apart)? Or should I just suck it up and attempt to buy them from the tiny uniform shop, and hope they've not sold out?

Vote YANBU plain will be fine for the 25 or so times he'll need to wear them.
YABU buy the damn clothes you plonker.

DS school is the same, he's wearing black joggers and a black hoody same year and school PE kit is expensive!

june2007 · 02/09/2020 20:21

Can they just where black joggers and plain sweat shirt? Worth asking the school.

Flappingflamingo · 02/09/2020 20:25

Our school have told us any brand/colour will do as they don't want us to go to extra expense. My son is also going into yr11 so I would not be paying for extra kit even though he does GCSE PE so would be wearing it at least twice a week

We have had a similar email but they made it clear that plain blue no logo joggers would be fine to wear.

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 02/09/2020 20:30

If you have Facebook you could ask around locally to see if anyone has outgrown PE kit they'd pass on cheaply to you

GetTheDoorFrank · 02/09/2020 20:32

My ds has recently started p1 and wears trackies on pe days while having his polo shirt and jumper on. It works well and means no extra expense

ILoveFood87 · 02/09/2020 20:32

We had this email. Our blue fleece is like £20 though and the kids can wear any black joggers and luckily my sons got around 6 bloody pairs. It's getting cold so he would need them anyway wouldn't he?

WhoWants2Know · 02/09/2020 20:33

Ours is the same. I bought plain black bottoms but I did get the school fleece because it's distinctive and because I know my kid won't wear a coat.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 02/09/2020 20:40

Thanks everyone.

I'll email his head of year I think, and see how receptive they are. I'm hoping if he wears the polo shirt under a plain fleece it'll show willing at least! Or, if not, maybe they'll allow plain joggers and the school fleece which will be just £35 rather than £60.

The daft thing is, last January when he did football outside they were allowed to wear any colour joggers and a long sleeved undershirt, but now it seems they'll get punished for not wearing uniform that has always been optional.

Worth asking! My youngest is going back in plain joggers and poloshirts as the uniform shop was sold out. Won’t have to re-buy in his current size and only need logo stuff when the needs the next size

Pixel7777 · 02/09/2020 20:53

We have this issue too, had to buy school jumpers as well as the usual blazer, to wear on top of PE or Games kit on those days, for more than one DC it all adds up.

Dixiechickonhols · 02/09/2020 20:54

You’re probably going to find they are out of stock - dds school is same. No pe tracksuits for 3-4 weeks (usually don’t sell many) so school will have no choice but to accept near enough. Only the Muslim girls usually wear the bottoms others wear skorts. DDs bottoms from yr7 when I was daft enough to buy full kit don’t fit she is now year 10 and none to buy from only uniform shop.

heartsonacake · 02/09/2020 20:55

It’s not up to us to decide whether YABU. It’s up to the school to let you know what’s acceptable, and then you go from there.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 02/09/2020 20:58

@Dixiechickonhols I must admit I was thinking that. Both garments are unisex and with nearly 2000 kids in the school I can't imagine the little shop is going to have enough stock for them all! I remember having to wait weeks back in the summer before year 7 for PE kits to come in.

Might sound a bit silly but one thing I would take into consideration is many secondary school aged kids would be mortified to wear plain if everyone else is in uniform. IMO I think you should buy it, he'll continue to get the use into the winter when it's cold anyway.

Dixiechickonhols · 02/09/2020 21:04

Daniel Ring the shop bet they haven’t got them. Can’t blame shop if they only usually sell to yr 7 and a few others they won’t have stock. Saves the argument.
