Not sure what to think about these

As yet, H and M haven’t started making skirts for boys, so not sure when these would be worn, apart from under trousers for added warmth?

Tights are a necessity in countries with an actual winter. They are worn under trousers by boys and girls. Great under snowsuit etc - kids up to 7 or 8 will wear tights, afterwards its tights or long johns. but little ones struggle with socks + long johns, so they wear tights (a gap between sock and trouser hem is a really bad idea if its -20 outside).

Soubriquet · 02/09/2020 19:08

It’s a good idea

Instead of socks, stick some tights on and they can’t pull them off

81Byerley · 02/09/2020 19:11

My boys wore tights as babies, and my grandsons wear them (aged 3-5). Practical, comfortable and warm.

hitchhikingghost · 02/09/2020 19:12

This is what children wear during winter where I live. Boys and girls. They are great because there is no gap between socks and trousers so when they put their winter overalls on they won’t be cold and wet from snow. And no bulky trousers under the overall which is the worst. Also it’s comfortable, they can move around and play. They just wear them with a t-shirt or jumper. 🙂

MrsMattMurdock · 02/09/2020 19:14

Boys wearing tights is a thing. It's not a new trans trend, if that's what you are thinking. I wish I had known this, i had to get my friends in Germany to post me tights for my toddler, they got theirs in Lidl. I could only find pink/cream ones here.

MrsMattMurdock · 02/09/2020 19:15

to clarify, he wore them under a long t-shirt in the house or for added warmth outside

BertieBotts · 02/09/2020 19:18

Most swedes and Germans are utterly horrified at how brits dress their kids in winter BTW :o they think we awfully underdress them, bordering on child neglect!

So yes tights under trousers would be a totally normal thing, girls and boys. There isn't some unwritten rule about them only going with skirts.

PablosHoney · 02/09/2020 19:23

Do most of them think that, that’s a very sweeping statement. I know a Swede living in England and she dresses her DC for a British winter not a Swedish one.

BertieBotts · 02/09/2020 19:25

In my experience yes. Why don't you ask her? The winter where I live isn't really any colder than the UK but kids have hundreds of layers on here.

Camomila · 02/09/2020 19:25

I always stock up on 'boy' tights when they have them in Aldi or Lidl, they're great to wear under waterproof trousers etc. Great to see them with patterns in H&M.

DBro used to wear tights under his trousers in winter in Italy, and I do the same for DS1 on holiday, tiled floors are really cold to sit on.

2bazookas · 02/09/2020 19:31

Footballers wear them under their shorts in winter. Skiers wear them under their salopettes.,

Dinocan · 02/09/2020 19:32

Baby boy tights are great. Little boys trousers just don’t work, they fall down all the time and tricky for little crawlers/walkers. Tights are just leggings with socks built in, always get them for my boy when I see them in Lidl. Didn’t know H&M did them, I might actually buy those!

MinaMurray · 02/09/2020 19:32

I used to dress my DS’s in tights under trousers in cold weather.

They’re very useful for keeping toddlers warm when they’re going through that stage of pulling their socks off at every opportunity.
Although I did find it hard to find tights that weren’t pink or with other ‘girly’ themes.

Aahh99 · 02/09/2020 19:33

I had a September baby, come Winter I used to put black or navy tights on him under trousers for layers.
At least they didn't keep falling off like socks did!
I don't see the problem.

ElfCakes · 02/09/2020 19:38

I have no issue with tights for boys but I did notice this on the H&M website earlier and wondered if they're going down the "all clothes for all children" route rather than boys and girls sections. Although there are still boys and girls sections on the website.

I've never had any trouble finding neutral (red/navy/white/grey/black) tights, though DS also wore some pink ones from his big sister. Even from UK brands not all the tights are pink or floral. Just had a look on the Next website and there are loads that aren't overtly feminine.

No, they classified those as boys' tights, but I've noticed that some items show up in both sections if someone at H&M deemed them neutral. But they don't classify tights as inherently feminine items because in Sweden they aren't.
thelegohooverer · 02/09/2020 19:54

It’s only a couple of generations ago that all infants, up to school age, wore very practical dresses. The gendering of children’s clothes is ridiculous. Tights are eminently practical for babies.

PablosHoney · 02/09/2020 20:16

She’s not the one saying most swedes and Germans think x 🙃

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/09/2020 20:24

Germans think we underdress our babies in summer let alone winter (thick duvet in the crib in the maternity ward for example!)

Tights are practical. Tights and shorts is a handy clothes combination for crawlers in autumn/spring.

SliceOfFriedGold · 02/09/2020 20:28

I used to put my boys in tights when they were in slings - their trousers rode up and they had a kind of sock gap. Tights solved that problem.

Kaiserin · 02/09/2020 20:28

Didn’t know "tights for boys" were a thing.

But when my 2 DS were cold in winter, I bought them black tights, (supposedly "for girls"?), to wear under their trousers. It worked just fine.

KatharinaRosalie · 02/09/2020 20:34

I'm from Northern Europe and tights are a totally unisex piece of clothing for young children. This is not a 'woke' statement.

PablosHoney · 02/09/2020 20:36

What nonsense

randomsabreuse · 02/09/2020 20:47

Because they're great in winter for toddlers/babies that won't keep socks on! My DS wears tights a lot in winter (nearly 2) but has moved on to not permitting anyone to wear socks without shoes, ever!

Tights save him cold feet (and legs if it's cold) and me a frantic dash around the house to hunt down soggy socks for the school run (generally they get removed, then sucked then abandoned or flung away!)
