Price for Gutters/Soffits/Fascias?

ShinyMe · 29/08/2020 16:04

I've got a broken gutter, and my soffits and fascias are a bit old, with corners coming up and warping a bit, that sort of thing. I've had a bloke round (from a reputable company recommended by a friend and a colleague separately) who's quoted me £2550 + vat to replace the lot. My first reaction is that that's a lot, and definitely more than I was expecting, but he says the scaffolding front and back is a big chunk of this price. I will get a second quote obviously, but how does this sound to people here? I haven't had any building work done in decades, so have no idea what scaffolding or work costs, so have no idea if he's wildly high or if that's just what it's going to cost me. (I'm in the Midlands, if that's relevant).

How big is your house?

I recently paid £5500 for a three bedroom semi for facias , sofits, guttering, 3 down pipes, eaves trays and a few small areas of uPVC cladding. So doesn't sound to bad to me.

Roselilly36 · 29/08/2020 16:11

I had ours replaced 3 years ago, £3200, large detached 5 bed house, South Coast.

ShinyMe · 29/08/2020 16:14

Sorry! Forgot to say how big the house is! I imagine that helps!

I'm in a 2 bed semi, need front and back doing. I don't have any downpipes, they're both on next door.

Sounds reasonable to me. Scaffolding is expensive. It would be worth getting another quote as you plan just to compare.

Socksey · 29/08/2020 16:14

scaffolding can be £500 plus depending on the house.... to replace all mine, which is mid terrace, is about £1400 plus scaffolding of about £600

Nestofvipers · 29/08/2020 16:17

Assuming they’re plastic down pipes the fact that you don’t need them replaced makes little difference as the material for the down pipe and guttering is pretty cheap so won’t make much difference to the price, it’s the labour and the scaffolding which constitute most of the cost.

mrsBtheparker · 29/08/2020 16:19

Sounds cheap to me! Whoever does the job make sure that the old ones are removed and any rotten wood underneath replaced, too many simply slap new over old and any water egress is not dealt with.

ShinyMe · 30/08/2020 09:17

Thanks everyone. I have left messages with another couple of companies to get other quotes, just waiting to hear back. But the job does need doing, and he comes well recommended, so I think I'm likely to go ahead with it.

I’m having all these repaired at the moment on a 3 bed semi - quote is £5k

LivingDeadGirlUK · 30/08/2020 09:21

I had mine cleaned and sofits/facias painted, was about £1.5k and most tbat was the scaffolding (3 stories)

Murinae · 30/08/2020 09:26

We just paid £6150 for ours but we have a large detached and needed three storeys of scaffolding in parts and had all the tiles taken up and the felt and battens replaced and then the tiles put back as well as all the soffits, guttering and facias replaced. Your quote sounds ok to me.

bananaskinsnomnom · 12/10/2020 17:24

Hello Mumsnet - decided to bump this old thread for some opinions if that’s ok because it’s the same subject!
I’ve been quoted £3800 for full soffit, guttering and fascia replacement - including new felt under roof tiles, two full new downpipes - price is inclusive of everything (so all materials, Labour, scaffolding, VAT, clearance of old material - he said scaffolding alone was £800 for my whole house) so I suppose really it’s £3000 - I’m having real trouble getting any response from companies - this quote is from a nation wide company. Two local companies didn’t appear to appointments at my house. I’ve spoken to two others on the phone Over the last 10 days and all I keep getting is “my boss will give you a ring”
2 bed semi - fairly wide - 15 meters odd. It’s old wooden right now and rotten in a couple of places and caused some damp last year so it’s in need.
Am I being ripped off? I’m trying to get more quotes and struggling - any advice appreciated.

ShinyMe · 12/10/2020 17:38

I think it sounds like a decent quote.

Bit weird seeing my thread bumped today - I asked two other local companies to quote me, neither got back in touch. I asked the first guy to go ahead, he said great! Will get back to you with dates asap, but then nothing... Today he's finally got back in touch and said he'll come on Wednesday! So my job is starting this week. Fingers crossed it goes ok...

They all sound a lot to me, which makes me think that my BIL's offer of doing ours and replacing our windows for £6k is a bloody good deal.

CoRhona · 12/10/2020 18:21

We had one lot of scaffolding, shutters cleaned, lined, waterproofed with spray under (no idea of technical term!!) for £1500 - so glad we did as the rain has now set in.

Your quote sounds fine to me. Our roofer did say the scaffolding added quite a lot on (had to have it, was over a glass roof).

DirtyHydrogen · 15/12/2020 18:46

Bumping this again as we need to replace ours as its v old and our guttering has just started leaking. Which trades do we need to contact? We're planning to get new windows in the new year. Can we get them done together or are they separate jobs?

PhatPhanny · 15/12/2020 18:53

With just the details you have given, sounds reasonable scaffolding isn't cheap.

ShinyMe · 15/12/2020 19:20

I just contacted a roofer and he organised the scaffolding and I paid the roofer for the full price, who then presumably paid the scaffolder.

I went with the company who quoted and they were really nice, did a good job on time and cleaned up after themselves. No more leaky gutters, I'm happy. :)

We are North East. Just had this done. got 3 quotes, all exactly the same price. Full gutters, upvc fascias, soffits, 2 downpipes, 3 bed semi. £1800. No scaffolding.

madroid · 15/12/2020 19:32

I'd be very wary of any roofer who will do that job without scaffolding. By law they are supposed to use it for a job lasting longer than 30 mins or so.

@DirtyHydrogen yes get both jobs done together (by separate companies though) and they can share the scaffolding so that you only pay one of them for it.

DirtyHydrogen · 15/12/2020 19:51

Brill. Thanks everyone. I'll see if I can get some roofers to quotes. Hopefully it will go as smoothly as @ShinyMe

BigBirdsbird · 15/12/2020 20:48

We've just had all our windows replaced by a company and then the same guys also did the gutters, soffits and fascias on our 2 bed terrace.
We didn't have scaffolding and paid 1800, it took about 2.5 days

Lobster12345 · 15/12/2020 23:14

Had this done 2 months ago. 4 bed house in Cambridgeshire. 3 of them took 2 days. £1900. Waited 3 months as they were struggling to get parts

cupcakesandglitter · 15/12/2020 23:19

@ShinyMe would be interested to know the company you used if possible please? I'm in the Midlands and looking to have the same done next year!
