Crap - I think I’ve bought a fake ERGObaby

I know I’m being unreasonable as I’m an idiot. I’m usually pretty savvy so I’m blaming extreme tiredness and baby brain!

I have bought an ERGObaby 360 carrier on eBay, advertised as brand new. I won it in an auction but it was still about half the price of RRP. Since I bought it, I’ve been reading that there are fakes floating about and I’m now thinking it seems too good to be true.

It’s due to turn up over the weekend and I’m just so sure it’s going to be a counterfeit. First of all, what do I have to look for to see if it’s genuine? And if it is fake, how do I go about getting my money back?

My local fire brigade used to take them to use for training. No idea of they still do but might be worth checking?

If you have had your money back and the item is on its way back to you can’t you just refuse to accept delivery?

happylittlechick · 31/08/2020 13:26

I'd use it. Give it a good wash first.

GilbertMarkham · 31/08/2020 13:33

It would probably be fine but in the extreme off chance that some part of it fails and you don't catch your baby, I wouldn't use it.

I would attach a tag to it saying it's not authentic if you donate it to charity too.

JanewaysBun · 31/08/2020 13:49

Definotely keep thrn destroy in year maybe?

fyi pp this isn't for the car but is a thing you strap to yourself to walk around carrying baby, like a Bjorn.

happylittlechick · 31/08/2020 13:50

You shouldn't donate to charity if you're not prepared to use it yourself. How horrible for someone without much money to use something you deem unsafe.

Hiphopopotamus · 31/08/2020 14:15

I definitely wouldn’t donate it - I never said I would Confused my options were either keep or destroy

Keep for a while and then perhaps give to a local sling library - NOT to use with babies obviously but as part of training of volunteers / peer supporters and public as to how easily fakes can slip through the net?

I'm in a baby wearing group and there was a horrific story of a mum using what she thought was a genuine buckle carrier for her newborn and the buckle just broke off and she only just managed to catch her baby before the baby would have hit the pavement. It's certainly reiterated to the group just how awful fakes can be. Ebay shouldn't really be allowing sending back of counterfeit goods (if you have proved it's a fake). Those items need destroying, not returning so some other unsuspecting parent could buy it.
