Swollen ankles (not pregnant)

Should I be worried?

I had swollen ankles when I was pregnant. Now my DS is almost 2.
I am due on my period any day and get very bloated before it starts.
I drink a lot of water and do quite a bit of walking everyday, I am overweight though.
I didn’t notice them a week ago, so I wonder if it’s related to my PMS. I also suffer with PMDD.

Does the swelling go down when you elevate your feet?

happytoday73 · 23/07/2020 19:03

Is your blood pressure OK?

CathyandHeathcliff · 23/07/2020 19:05

@bitofawimpreally they seem to go down when I elevate my legs, yes.

@happytoday73 I don’t know, I haven’t had my blood pressure taken since just after I had my son.

Happy has made a good point, too.

For peace of mind, please give your doctor a call. It could be the heat, or hormones, but it's best to rule out other issues.

I suffered with swollen ankles around 18 months ago. At first, they 'drained' when I put my feet up, so I just carried on as normal. I ended up in intensive care with heart issues, and the swollen ankles were the first warning sign.

@bitofawimpreally oh god that’s really scary Sad what was the issue if you don’t mind me asking?
I think mine is related to PMS as I do tend to get very bloated and the heat doesn’t help. And I didn’t notice it earlier in the month, but I will get it checked.

Yes you do need to see your GP. Could be your monthly, but also could be heart issues, liver or kidney problems or many other things. Some blood tests and a blood pressure check will rule out a lot of nasties

I’ve attached a photo of my feet. Do they look really bad? I’m just wondering how swollen they look to others as I see them everyday.

@CathyandHeathcliff, the docs still don't really know why, but my body was overproducing adrenaline on a massive scale. It's caused permanent damage to my heart, but luckily I'm managing it well with medication and lifestyle changes. The swollen ankles were the first sign that my heart was struggling.

If I had gone to the doctors when my ankles first started swelling, I might have been able to avoid the worst of the complications. I can't change that now, but I will always advise others to get checked out ASAP. Even just a phone call to say you've noticed it, and you wanted to check whether it needed closer attention, would put your mind at rest.

@bitofawimpreally that sounds really worrying! Hope you’re ok now.
