it really irritates me and I'm sure it's unreasonable, but it does.

i really don't like it either. Loads of abbreviations irritate actually..

MaryAnnSingleton · 30/09/2007 12:57

it's just so...I can't think why it annoys - MIL says it and I want to say, 'oh you mean UNIVERSITY' which would be plain rude...

but university is just so loooong to say, it wastes valuable drinking time.

you could save probaby 2 hours of your life by saying uni instead of university. so in fact uni is life saving, so yes yabu

I hate it too. Nobody said it when I went to university (but then I am very old ) and it seems to have come out of the student obsession with Neighbours. That was the first time I heard it anyway.

Blandmum · 30/09/2007 13:17

SN, I have to say DNA in work though, I don't have the time for the full thing

(as I plan my lesson on DNA/RNA structure and function for the sixth form.....or is that 6th fm?)

Easywriter · 30/09/2007 13:19

I like school instead.

shreddies · 30/09/2007 13:20

Me too. It sounds lazy

Blandmum · 30/09/2007 13:22

I had much more fun in university than I did in sch

Blandmum · 30/09/2007 13:22

Thinking back I think that I used to say 'Going to collage' rather than going to university

Niecie · 30/09/2007 13:24

Exactly MB - thats what I called it too.

Gobbledigook · 30/09/2007 13:24

yeah, kind of annoying but it's the best way to describe it!

Blandmum · 30/09/2007 13:25

this was back in the mists of time in 1980!

{shock]

I'm farking old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

Niecie · 30/09/2007 13:32

Is that when you started of finished? I started in 1985 but I think it was about that time that Neighbours started.

Twiglett · 30/09/2007 13:34

oh no I'm old and I call it Uni

what I object to is the polys that are now unis .. like the metropolitan university of bognor regis or whatever

zookeeper · 30/09/2007 13:34

I started in 1984 and said college too.

Don't like "Gap year" either - it seems so pretentious somehow

Twiglett · 30/09/2007 13:35

Uni Bar

Poly Bop

oh those halcyon days

Niecie · 30/09/2007 13:48

I agree with about that Twiglett too. The old polys on the whole are still not as good as the old universities either so I am not sure what it achieved.

beansprout · 30/09/2007 13:50

It's good for annoying people who went to the former polys though. "Oh, University of Milton Keynes, didn't that used to be a Poly? So, not a proper university then...."

NotAnOtter · 30/09/2007 13:50

it is AWFUL

esp when it's really a poly !!!!!

NotAnOtter · 30/09/2007 13:51

i call them polyversity

Twiglett · 30/09/2007 13:52

Polys were for the slightly thicker people after all

beansprout · 30/09/2007 13:53

Well, quite. Degrees in knitting, that kind of thing....

Bluestocking · 30/09/2007 13:54
NotAnOtter · 30/09/2007 13:55

ooohh bring back that liverpool university/liverpool polytechnic rivalry - now that is what i call good fun
