To think a pregnancy test is an essential item?

I popped to the local pharmacy today. There was a sign on the door saying two customers at any one time. So I waited outside.

A pharmacy assistant came to the door.

“You have to wait outside you know, you can’t just barge in!”

I looked at her, a bit confused. “Yep I know, that’s why I’m waiting here.”

She asked me what I wanted. I said a pregnancy test. She took real umbrage to that. “THAT IS NOT AN ESSENTIAL ITEM! You can pick up a prescription or medication ONLY.”

I just looked at her. “Well I would like to see if I’m pregnant or not, please can I buy one or can I speak to the pharmacist?”

“I’ve just told you no. You shouldn’t be trying to conceive at a time like this anyway.”

I walked away at that point, came home and ordered one on Amazon to arrive tomorrow. I am left dumbstruck by this interaction. I was polite, I stood well back from her, I didn’t raise my voice. But it’s okay to be shouted at now? And being told I shouldn’t have a baby? Very bizarre.

After that phone call on top of everything else, I would go down to the pharmacy in person today and refuse to leave until the manager had seen me. Otherwise, you won't get hold of them because this twat will behave like the gate keeper.

Make sure that you get into the shop by telling her (if she asks) that it is a private medical issue that you won't be discussing out on the footpath with the entire district as an audience.

@Nickname21

Blimey, you couldn't make stuff like this up.
You definitely could

Wtf!!! I'd be making a massive complaint about her! That's absolutely ridiculous. I went into my chemist last week just to buy deodorant and I had a nice friedly chat with the assistants too! I wouldnt let that drop if I was you

Yeh somehting about this doesn,t sound believable.

MiniMum97 · 20/06/2020 22:45

Definitely complain. That's outrageous.

Oh dear

I would be definitely complaining. I have been going to our local pharmacy all through lockdown for prescriptions and other items. Yes their hours changed a bit. Opening later and closed over lunch. Though two branches in same town so they staggered the lunch hours. At no time was I made to feel bad for anything I was buying that was non essential ( that is in some people's eyes) As long as I socially distanced, used the hand sanitiser on the way in and followed the arrows they were happy.

I don’t accept being spoken to by anyone like that, let alone a HCP.

This person isn't even an HCP, they're just a shop assistant. I've encountered this in pharmacy salespeople before though. Some of them seem to have an inflated view of their own importance.
