Looking to get a super comfy new sofa soon and spent a bit of time browsing online.

Lots and lots of velvet sofas around which I really like the look of. But is a velvet sofa wildly impractical? We have 2 small ish kids.

Can't think how you would clean any spillages or stains without making the velvet go all funny. If you have a velvet sofa, would you recommend?

Be careful of the studs some jeans have on back pockets too @Mammyloveswine and pet claws.

I find leather furniture stressful! But hope It works out for you.

We got one from snug sofa, it wasn't as expensive as most so we wouldnt be as heartbroken if it was damaged as if it was a £2000+ sofa. We have a small child too. It has a small scratch on it from our dog, and it wipes clean well and pet hair/dirt comes off so easily with a lint brush. We do mostly cover it with a throw to protect it though and don't allow eating or drinking on it.

We have a large dark velvet sofa and a light velvet chair from loaf.com. They are amazing - love them. We haven't had problems with marks but we don't have pets and our 2 DS are both late teens.

I’ve got a wine coloured one from next and love it! I got chocolate all over it (sat on a Malteser and didn’t notice!) and it all just wiped off!

I had a microfiber velvet sofa for a few years (sold as hubby didn't like it) and it was amazing with young children, nothing absorbed into fibres unless left for a long time, everything just wiped off.

We had one from Laura Ashley before our children were born 12 yrs ago and it still looks great. It does wipe clean although we paid extra for stain guard. Albeit we don't allow much food in the Longe and definitely no shoes. I still love it.

We have one and I love it. This is despite having a very messy DD and a very sheddy cat. The cushion covers are machine washable and even go in the tumble drier. The cat seems less inclined to claw it than our previous sofa, which he found irresistibly nubbly.

We have a gloriously ostentacious hague blue velvet sofa, set in a gold metal frame, and it's stayed clean. We have a shedding jack-chihuahua, a toddler, a baby and my husband is the 'lounge and eat' type. Part of the cleaning routine is brushing it down, and there are no shoes in our house. Maybe a dark colour is the trick, but our dog is white and fawn so perhaps not? She does get brushed daily, every two days with the furminator though. My toddler likes to sit on the floor next to the coffee table to eat snacks, so most food damage is to my lovely persian rug Hmm

We have a velvet sofa from the lounge co

It’s wipeable and even with a baby and toddler who dribble and spill on it it’s as good as new with the off wipe down

I have two Cadbury purple ones from Next. Real cotton velvet tends to stand up better, stain treated or not.

Whereas the cheaper polyester ones and the crushed velvet feel horrible and do not stand up to marks as well.

I would never part with mine, I am getting one recovered next year but it is 12 years old and I would like a change. It will be velvet again but either egg yolk yellow, chartreuse or mid pink.
