Just handed in dissertation! So worried it's rubbish - did anyone worry they would fail but passed it?

I cannot believe it's done but my Masters dissertation is handed in as of today. So fucking relieved and happy to be finished!

The only thing is I honestly am worried now it won't pass and OMFG I really don't want to leave with no degree after all this. I think if I fail though I can have another attempt for the minimum grade to pass?

Did anyone else get scared they failed, but actually did pass?

Or did anyone fail and pass on a second attempt, so it was all ok in the end?!

A friend was adamant her dissertation was awful and she had failed.

She got a distinction and the prize for best dissertation of her cohort ;)

Congratulations!!

I was terrified I had failed too despite my adviser not being terribly worried and giving me advice like you had. I think it's pretty common.

I was convinced I would fail, I ended up with a 2:1. I think the more you stare at something in detail the more you lose perspective about the overall quality.

GreyGardens88 · 23/06/2020 20:53

Yes I did, I still remember being up all night the night before working on it. Got a high 2:1 on it in the end.

NotPlayingOut · 23/06/2020 20:59

I was so full of fear, so stressed that loads of hair fell out. My MSc thesis came in at 91% this from someone who scraped a 2:2 after a resubmission for my BSc. Your supervisor would have told you if it was crap or borderline during your sessions with them, they want you to pass Smile

R0tational · 11/08/2021 03:11

Im so worried I will fail. I didnt have much time to implement supervisors comments. He didnt see all chapters as I didnt have much time to do everything. I feel so scared.

Aquamarine1029 · 11/08/2021 03:54

It's a fucking nightmare. I was very confident throughout the entire ordeal, and as soon as I submitted it I had a flood of shit feelings. Just absolute shit, that I had failed at everything and I was a fool to think otherwise. Turns out it was just fine Smile.

I just had a nuclear release of stress, worry, hopefulness, uncertainty, you name it.

honeyytoast · 11/08/2021 03:54

I bet you’ve done amazingly

BabyClicks · 11/08/2021 05:01

Please don't stress, I am sure you did fine. Probably much better than fine! I was like this after my undergrad thesis, in tears at submission deadline and so convinced it was awful I almost didn't submit it. Thank goodness I did, I ended up with a high distinction and first class honours on my degree (Australia). As my very pragmatic and direct husband said, it is also in the university's interest that you do well. I found that strangely comforting (and very, very cynical!)

It seems everyone else feels the same way, reading these comments!

R0tational · 11/08/2021 08:47

Thank you for your kind words folks, they were comforting in the middle of the night. I have woken up with more worries but I think my best bet is to shush them as you're right BabyClicks, it does seeem awfully common. Sigh!

Bluntness100 · 11/08/2021 08:51

Yup my daughter, every time, from gcse on, and she’s a lawyer so lots of exams, never anything other than straight a or a star, and a first etc, always in tears thinking she’s failed.

The answer here is how much of your feelings is stress and how much is a realistic view of your own performance?

Fernando072020 · 11/08/2021 09:16

Congratulations! I'm in the middle of writing mine and the time is just running away 🤣
It's perfectly normal to feel like this but it's highly doubtful if you've gotten this far that you will fail! It's so nerve-wracking handing in the final copy but you've done it and it's in! Try to distract yourself, tell yourself there's nothing you can do now and it's more than likely you will pass and get your masters.

Sorry to be thick but why is it in the unis best interests to pass you? I’m doing my final essay for an OU degree and haven’t been up to my usual standard this year but I’ve passed all essays at 2:2. Just bloody convinced this last one I’ll get done for plaigurism or something….. not that that’s happened before.

I think it is stress actually.
