AIBU to go for a drive to see if my eyesight is, like a suspect, getting worse?

Dominic Cummings thinks this is the correct thing to do. He thought his eyesight may be worse due to being ill so got behind the wheel and went for a drive around to check.
Vote No if you think going for a drive is a good idea.

‘ I suspect’ should be in the title btw!

YABU
There is no "No"
Explain which option means what

Thighmageddon · 25/05/2020 17:21

If you go for a drive you must try hard to remember if you have to stop for petrol though.

Unescorted · 25/05/2020 17:28

Presumably he is unable to measure out 20m from the back of his car like the rest of us...…

From gov.uk highway code

Standards of vision for driving
You must be able to read (with glasses or contact lenses, if necessary) a car number plate made after 1 September 2001 from 20 metres.

Thecruxxofitis · 25/05/2020 17:29

It’s ok if you go as long as it’s not to enjoy your surroundings

Zandathepanda · 25/05/2020 17:30

Sorry if it’s not clear - I am in a rather frustrated mood.
Vote ‘no’ as in ‘not’ in the YANBU.

Vote YANBU if you think driving is a good way of testing your eyesight.

It's absolutely the most reasonable thing to do.

Underhisi · 25/05/2020 17:31

Make sure you take a small kid with you.

Zandathepanda · 25/05/2020 17:33

Unescorted yes - maybe he was too ill to use google to look that up.
Also (whilst he thought his eyesight was dodgy?) he took his young child out in the car in the local area and they had to stop for his child to have a wee. So what happened on the drive from London to Durham?

OP posts:
MinorArcana · 25/05/2020 17:38

Maybe they put the kid in pull ups on the long drive so they wouldn’t have to worry about him needing a wee?

And the eyesight thing is one of the most irresponsible excuses for going for a drive that I’ve ever heard.

SquishySquirmy · 25/05/2020 17:38

That's the very first thing you are asked to do in a practical driving test.
"Please drive to a castle half an hour away with your family as passengers".

It's very important for safety to check your eyes work!

This is the manoeuvre I was hoping for in my test but got reversing into a bay instead!

He didn’t drive to a castle...

ShinyFootball · 25/05/2020 17:49

I need to check my eyes frequently and always do this by loading my family into a car and driving 30 mins to a nice town.

I find we often need a wee when we get there and so have to go for a walk in the woods.

This is well within the rules of lockdown and so I have done this 3 times a week through the whole Corona situation.

HelsinkiLights · 25/05/2020 17:51

Absolutely sensible advice........just like pouring petrol on a bonfire to get in going.

CornishYarg · 25/05/2020 18:04

My eyesight is terrible so to make a change from using a chart, my optician just tells me to remove my glasses and go for a drive. If I hit more cars than I did last appointment, she knows my eyesight has deteriorated Grin

Thubten · 25/05/2020 18:05

Could his wife not drive??????

kissmewherethesundontshine · 25/05/2020 18:08

Dominic Cummings arriving for his eyesight test...complete with his family he cares so much about in the car..

SquishySquirmy · 25/05/2020 18:12

Barnard castle is a town not a castle?????
Well that changes everything.

Thecruxxofitis · 25/05/2020 18:19

@SquishySquirmy the town is named after the castle it surrounds

KittenVsBox · 25/05/2020 18:20

Well, there are castle ruins in the town of Bernard Castle. Not sure exactly where he went tho.

OP: so long as you life nowhere near me, please do use a test drive to check out your eyesight.

1Morewineplease · 25/05/2020 18:22

I’ve got cataracts... think I’ll go for a thirty mile drive to see if they’ve got any worse. Might take a small child with me to keep me company.

DominicCummingsIBU · 25/05/2020 18:25

Well I was going to wait for my consultant and the DVLA to decide if I am safe to drive due to epilepsy.

Fuck it.

AnxiousAnnie13 · 25/05/2020 18:25

Could his wife not drive??????

I kept hoping one of the journalists would ask this. If my husband felt even slightly like he couldn't see well enough to drive, I would insist on driving us.
