To say thank you to all the teachers out there

I have watched in horror as the number of threads about teachers has increased over recent weeks and the overwhelming majority of them have been horrifyingly negative. Yes you can be worried about your child’s education, yes you may have concerns about the impact of them currently not being in school and being taught but can we please realise that the constant horribleness about teachers is totally unnecessary?

Teachers have always had, and continue to have, my upmost respect - I do what others consider is a challenging job but bloody hell, I could never ever teach. I see what friends and family who teach go through and the pressure they are put under constantly with diminishing resources.

This is an extraordinary time. This is not teachers having a jolly. It is a bloody pandemic.

So am AIBU to say that we should remember that teachers are fellow human beings and seeing a constant stream of negativity about them and their profession may have an impact on them? And so often it is from posters who will pull out the “be more kind” line when it suits their agenda.

I am definitely not being unreasonable to say thank you to the teachers out there. How on Earth you put up with all of this I will never know.

I'm married to a teacher, and it's horrendous the abuse they have to put up with. It's nice to finally hear some recognition for everything they go through, and the shitty entitled parents they have to put up with. Good thread OP.

Mullikins · 20/05/2020 13:45

Can teachers really not have just one thread without the usual digs from the usual negative critical posters? There are hundreds of negative threads to choose from if you want to teacher bash. This doesn't need to be one of them.

Anyway...well done to all the teachers out there who are doing their best for the kids they teach. You're doing a brilliant job!

MagicMojito · 20/05/2020 13:57

Huge Thankyou to my childrens teachers who set work daily and have been reading stories via seesaw, weekly check ins etc, whilst looking after their own children and also going into school to look after key workers children. I couldn't do their job. Star Flowers

flumposie · 20/05/2020 14:05

Thank you so much. I'm trying my best and some of the comments on here other threads have made me so sad . Behind the scenes as well as juggling my teaching with supporting my child as a single parent, I've had to deal with the stress of a relative with suspected coronavirus ( they are fine now) and then last Friday the unexpected death of another relative. I just wish people would consider that we are all dealing with our own stuff behind the job.

countbackfromten · 20/05/2020 14:07

I’m skipping past those who choose to still be horrible and negative and instead concentrating on all those sending lovely messages about teachers or all those teachers reading this!

It has been horrible to see and frankly some people should be ashamed of themselves.

But instead I wanted to focus on the teachers themselves with a big thank you. You really deserve it.

mbosnz · 20/05/2020 14:08

@flumposie Condolences on the death of your relative, and I can only imagine your relief at the recovery of your other relative. And on top of that, you're teaching, in a strange new world. I imagine you'd rather be pulling the duvet up over your head, and saying you'll come out when it's 2021!

MsAwesomeDragon · 20/05/2020 14:12

Thank you for this thread, it's lovely 🌻
I've had a few nice messages from parents this week as well, letting me know they appreciate the videos I've been sending to explain the work, and thanking me for the feedback I'm giving. It feels like a completely different world when I look at the press and read aibu, as apparently we teachers are the devil incarnate and care far more about having a jolly and don't want to be back with the kids.

Thank you so much for doing the job you are doing as well. That must be incredibly stressful at this time!! 🌻

pooiepooie25 · 20/05/2020 14:15

Thank you OP and all the other kind posters. It is so appreciated.

mbosnz · 20/05/2020 14:16

I just don't get the media/political stance.

All I get from the teachers unions' and schools' stance (as supported by the BMA) is that schools and teachers are understandably concerned by the lack of detail as to how return to school can be safely implemented, for both staff and students. With no PPE, a nigh on impossibility of social distancing, how to fund the increased expense in terms of cleaning etc. And they want some clear answers, and reassurance, rather than just being told 'we're told by the science that this is safe'. . .without releasing details of the science that says this is so, let alone who the scientists are. These are valid concerns and fair questions.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but seriously they could be attempting to divine the future by reading the entrails of a goat and saying they're following the science, just trust them. I don't think they've earned that level of trust from anyone.

I cant speak for all teachers but I am DESPERATE to get back to my students. But because all of the above stated is why I am wary.

WhatCFeryIsThis · 20/05/2020 14:36

YANBU.

It's actually “Thank a teacher day” today!!

You can send a free e-card from thankateacher.co.uk

If anybody wants to take advantage and send a teacher a kind word in a card, I'm sure they'd feel very cared about.

I'm not a teacher, but my mother is, and my children aren't school age yet but I'm hoping that by the time they are, teachers feel a lot more valued in their profession.

HipTightOnions · 20/05/2020 14:41

Thank you for this lovely thread.

TheWoollybacksWife · 20/05/2020 15:10

A huge thank you from me too and this thread has just prompted me to email my son's form tutor to say thank you.

PurpleCrowbarWhereIsLangCleg · 20/05/2020 15:11

Thank you to my lovely colleagues who teach my (usually, honest) lovely dc.

& thank you OP. This has really cheered me up Thanks

ChloeDecker · 20/05/2020 15:57

Thank you so much OP (and all that you and your colleagues do too)

Thank you to my DD’s teacher, TA and support staff for doing your best during this pandemic. Gin waiting for you as a thank you.

midwestsummer · 20/05/2020 16:24

As children's social worker I understand what it is like to always be getting a kicking from someone while doing your best in very difficult circumstances.
The teachers I know personally work very hard.
I have thanked the teachers at my dc's school for the work that they have done.

MurrayTheDemonicTalkingSkull · 20/05/2020 16:41

Thanks OP. Really appreciate it. To be fair, our HT has been passing on emails from parents and they’ve been so complimentary about everything we’ve been doing. Had a couple of tough days this week and today only 6 of my class of 35 turned up at the appointed time, but I’m contenting myself giving the ones doing the work the best feedback I can and hoping that the ones who didn’t turn up were enjoying themselves in the sun (safely!).

Thank you, OP, for everything you’re doing too. I know it’s difficult as a junior doctor at the best of times. It must be awful right now.

MooPointCowsOpinion · 20/05/2020 16:43

Thank you! I can admit to having a very low opinion of the general public right now due to all the teacher bashing, I have even considered what’s the point of educating anyone if that’s what they grow up to be... but we are a strong profession! I will keep on going!

Viviennemary · 20/05/2020 16:44

Not more of this.

purpleboy · 20/05/2020 17:12

Another thanks to all the teachers out there doing your best, during such a shit time.

My eldest dds teacher has 3 children at home and one of the students complained to the hoy about hearing her kids on the video calls. Dd was appalled and so was I when she told me. Give them a fucking break ffs, they are doing their best.
Both dds are at private school so we are still paying fees for frankly a fifth of the work they would be doing in school, but that is nobody's fault the teachers are doing their best, and this is a completely unprecedented situation, absolute hats off to them.

mbosnz · 20/05/2020 17:14

Not more of this

It's okay, it's not compulsory! Smile

EmeraldShamrock · 20/05/2020 17:29

I agree OP. Those threads they are awful. I am grateful for my DC's education the role of a teacher should be respected more.

ilovesooty · 20/05/2020 17:33

I'm a former teacher and this is a lovely thread on the whole. I suppose there are always going to be a couple of naysayers who can't control themselves.

tinytemper66 · 20/05/2020 17:34

To be honest I couldn't care less what someone on a forum thought of me. I know how hard we work. I also recognise how hard others work, even before this crisis.

saraclara · 20/05/2020 17:41

Thank you OP. I retired from teaching two years ago, but I know my ex colleagues (not to mention my daughter and her partner who are both teachers) are working really hard to try to keep things going for their pupils. I also know they're actually worried for some of them, so really want to get them back in school.

Though they're probably not on mumsnet, I imagine the stuff in the tabloids over the last few days is a kick in the teeth for them.
