Has anyone ever won a magazine competition?

Out of furlough/lockdown boredom I have been indulging in my guilty pleasure of women's magazines (think Take A Break, Love It, etc) and doing the competitions.

AIBU to ask if anyone here has actually won any of these competitions? Especially the big prizes, such as the £10000 wins and luxury holidays.

Would be interesting to know if anyone has won anything Smile

I won a kite in Bunty when I was about 8. I was so excited Smile

I won Star Letter in Psychologies magazine once. Was sent some lovely high end toiletries.

I won a bucket of chicken shit from Gardener's weekly!

underthepatio · 06/04/2020 00:32

Many years ago I won a fitted kitchen in a slogan competition in the now defunct Perfect Home magazine.

I won a video about John whitaker’s horse Milton in Horse and Pony magazine probably about 1994.

About 10 years ago I entered a competition on dd1’s behalf in sparkle magazine. They had probably 10 different competitions throughout the magazine and the top prize was to win one of each prize, which we got! It was like Christmas for months for dd as more and more stuff turned up from various places - a scooter, inflatable sofa, flying fairies, signed books etc etc. She loved it :)

I won a recipe book from Look In magazine & £5 from Blue Jeans magazine in the late 70's.

A year's supply of Original source shower gel 3 years ago, 3 flavours left and still working through them (I used up the coconut within the first 6 months) and there's still mango and the scary mint one left. DS likes it now though Grin

I won a toy car (the posh metal german one costing £100). We had failed to get pregnant so saw that as a sign and yes it was. Dd aged three loves the car. Its not going anywhere when she outgrowns it (its pretty enough to be art) as it helped during a dark time

There was a kids magazine called Fast Forward that I used to like. When I was about 9 I won.....A box set of Dad’s Army videos’s 😂😂 I actually liked Dad’s Army but I’m genuinely curious as to why they were a prize in a kids magazine.

About 30 years ago I won a holiday for two worth £1k.

Within the last year I won the Ladygram competition in The Lady. Unfortunately the prize that week was some weird thing called a scarflet that I can't ever imagine wearing. I still do the puzzle every time but I only post the entry now when it is something I might vaguely like to win.

£2500 from Take a Break, about ten years ago. Quite a lot of smaller magazine prizes over the years of £100 or £50. Lots of stuff from other competitions. But it's been my hobby on and off for over twenty years, and almost certainly not really worth the time invested!

thetemptationofchocolate · 06/04/2020 09:02

I don't enter them often, but once I won £50. It might not seem like much but it made a huge difference to that month's budget and I was delighted :)

sueelleker · 06/04/2020 09:33

I've won a couple, doing on-line entries. A nice eco-kettle, and a weeks holiday to Butlins.

BanKittenHeels · 06/04/2020 09:36

I won a £25 Faith (the shoe shop, do they still exist?) voucher from J17 in about 1996.

ShadowLightning · 06/04/2020 09:38

I won a £600 desk fan a few years ago for some home magazine. And a £250 French Connection from Cosmo.

I’ve actually won loads of things over the years but most are from company websites. And although I can’t really be bothered with the effort anymore, I won a whole load of instagram comps last year - I’ve found those the most successful these days.

purpleclaire · 06/04/2020 09:39

I've won lots of different competitions - holiday to Turkey, 2 night break at Champneys, £300 worth of Playdoh, concert tickets, kids' toys etc...but about 20 years ago, won a Dualit toaster from Marie Claire magazine - still works and gets used almost every day.
Good luck!

Doobedoobedoobe · 06/04/2020 09:39

I know someone who seems to win every single Facebook comp she enters. I however never win a single bean and never have. Some people are just lucky!

WotnoPasta · 06/04/2020 09:39

2 holidays!

DelurkingAJ · 06/04/2020 09:40

I won two tickets to Blythe Spirit in a university magazine about 15 years ago. Took now DH. Nice seats too!

BiBiBirdie · 06/04/2020 09:42

Yes I won an online Love It competition they ran on twitter. I won the entire Holly Willoughby for Very range at the time. Probably about £250/300 of stuff.
I also won a set of perfumes from a Take a Break competition.
These were about 10 years ago though

SnowsInWater · 06/04/2020 09:48

I've won quite a few tickets to things so nice but nothing major (the family of four theatre tickets to a major show were the best as they were worth about $500). I have joined a competition website so have been entering a lot recently with no joy.

GemmaTellerMorrow · 06/04/2020 10:01

I won £300 in a Mumsnet comp.

DH and I both have creative hobbies and between us we've won a lot of competitions from related magazines. Some have been pure luck - where you just enter your name and address - and some have been skill based. Prizes have ranged from freebies worth about a fiver up to holiday in a luxury hotel.

This month DH has won some vouchers for hobby plus £80, skill based. Plus the boost to his ego Grin

Mirada · 06/04/2020 10:23

A weekend for two at a 4 star hotel in York, from The Oldie magazine - had no-one to go with, so gave to neighbours.
Two tickets to the Edinburgh Tattoo (The Independent).
A pair of garden clippers (gardening mag).

BikeRunSki · 06/04/2020 10:26

I had “letter of the month” in New Woman about 10 years ago, and won a h as most of L’Occitane toiletries and perfume.
