Because I don’t want to go to the hospital.
I have decided I think, that I will give my 20w scan. Actually at 21+4 a miss.
For background I’ve had scans at 10+3, 13+1 and 18+2. All is fine. No neural tube defects, kidney, spinal and abdominal wall issues have been documented and she is doing as she should be.

I’m really concerned about my apts
There are confirmed cases of covid at the hospital (I work there, we’ve been told)
We’ve also been told that one of the midwives is receiving treatment for covid. They said at my apt last week, they don’t have PPE.
I’ve got an autoimmune issue and asthma. And apart from a brief visit to the midwife last week and from my mum when I had crippling abdominal pain and thought I might be in early labour. I’ve been quarantining for two weeks.

Would I be u to miss it
I know it’s optional but would they mark me negatively for not going?
Will they refer to ss or anything.

Help!

The 20-wk scan is really really important. It can't go against you but it would be very unwise to miss it.

Thehop · 29/03/2020 22:07

An you have it at a different hospital?

Knoxinbox · 29/03/2020 22:08

Do you live in London? Can you get to the feral medicine centre for an anomaly scan?
I personally wouldn’t miss it no, did you have an investigation for your crippling abdominal pain?! Get the baby and placenta checked

Good luck

raspberryk · 29/03/2020 22:09

I wouldn't go with all that info, especially as you had a scan at 18w.
I presume you aren't working at the hospital at the moment.

Knoxinbox · 29/03/2020 22:10

Thy wouldn’t refer to SS for missing it unless you are already under concern for maternal reasons drug pregnancy (substance abuse, domestic abuse, criminal behaviour, sex work etc etc)

Knoxinbox · 29/03/2020 22:10

*during pregnancy

twattymctwattwat · 29/03/2020 22:11

The 20 week one is the most important one by far. Important for baby and mum.

Can you go to a private scan clinic? I'm not sure if they'd still be open but most are very small clinics, often outside of the hospital setting although the ultrasound technician will be working in a hospital as well as privately but might be an option if they're open as you won't be exposing yourself as much.

NameChange30 · 29/03/2020 22:11

I was going to say YABU but after reading your post, I don't think you are. You had a scan at 18+2. I understand your anxiety about going to the hospital given what you know about the covid-19 cases there. However, do you know if the midwives would be likely to come into contact with the sonographers? I thought the ultrasound department would be reasonably separate from the other maternity services? Perhaps I am naive though.

If you contacted the department and asked about protective measures, they might be able to reassure you, but if they can't I would understand you not wanting to go.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 29/03/2020 22:13

My baby's heart condition was found at the 20 week scan.

It wouldn't have been found on a scab at 18 weeks because his heart would have been too small to detect the issue.

For the reason a 20 week scan need to happen.

But I totally understand.

Perhaps go private?

Essexgirlupnorth · 29/03/2020 22:14

Where did you have the 18 week scan was it NHS or private? What did they look at?
The anomaly scan is optional but obvious if you don't have it the baby could be born with an abnormality that could have been picked up.
The scan department at the hospital I work in is only letting woman who have scans in, no partners and social distancing is inforced in waiting room.

MsMD · 29/03/2020 22:18

If you work at the hospital what's the difference between going there to work and going there for a scan?

playthestation · 29/03/2020 22:19

I think I would consider why you have had so many scans already and if the scan at 18 weeks actually checked everything that the 20 week scan does. It's not something I would want to miss tbh.

AdriannaP · 29/03/2020 22:21

I would pay for a private scan if you can. Don’t risk anything for the sake of £100.

ineedaholidaynow · 29/03/2020 22:22

Why have you had so many scans so far? Is there an issue?

1300cakes · 29/03/2020 22:32

Have you got the report back for the 18 week scan so you can see what has been covered?

PanicAtTheDiscLo · 29/03/2020 22:40

Hi, sorry. I should’ve been clearer.
10+ weeks. Unexpected pregnancy, rushed into hospital with UTI, was dated and had some of the tests for 12w, because they were unsure I would be seen in time.
13+ twelve week scan.
Both the above NHS.

18+ paid for at a Nuffield.
My sisters best friend was one of the first covid cases in Britain and they live together but Dsis was due to move home to my parents mid March, and I was concerned if my sister became unwell I would potentially have to isolate too.

I’m not working at the hospital at present

Midwifery and sonographers and perinatal mental health all in the same area of hospital- share a staff room.

I had my 20 week scan at 18 weeks and they called me back to get a better look at the heart it was too small at 18 weeks. But if they got all the measurements and views at yours I can see why you wouldn't want to risk it. I think you just need to do what's right for you. I think many of our routine appointments will be cancelled now which is scary but also the thought of being anywhere near a hospital is scary! Can't win!

GrimDamnFanjo · 30/03/2020 01:14

I would get proper medical advice.
My experience of the 20 wk scan is that they are checking very specifically for issues that they would not have looked for or been able to check earlier.

Staffymumma · 30/03/2020 15:51

I would always advise to go. In my last pregnancy, I had 4 scans, 8, 12, 17 and 20 week scan, on the 20 week one they picked up that the main part of my boys brain hadn’t developed and I had to say goodbye to him at 22 weeks. No issues at all found on any previous scans. Sorry to lower the tone and be morbid, I just wanted to let you know that sometimes even with previous scans, things can be missed so to be sure I’d personally go.

I understand the times are awful at the moment, so I do feel for you. All the best OP

Beckyboom · 30/03/2020 16:37

I don’t want to be the voice of doom but something serious was found at the 20 week scan with my youngest. Fortunately it was discovered and preventative steps were taken. This particular complication wasn’t visible at my scan 2 weeks earlier (already a complicated pregnancy for unrelated reasons so having fortnightly scans throughout).

I don’t mean to scaremonger with that (it’s far far more likely that your scan will be absolutely fine!), just implore you not to miss it just in case.

I really feel for you and can’t imagine how scary things must be at the moment when you’re pregnant especially with asthma.

As others have said above, if there is any way you could afford it, I would have it done privately as you’d be exposed to much fewer people.

MakeLemonade · 30/03/2020 16:53

I also had a severe problem identified at 20 week scan than wasn’t obvious at a scan at 18 weeks - although I suspect a highly skilled sonographer may have caught it.

I wouldn’t miss a 20 week scan and I’m sure that they will be taking steps to ensure it’s as safe as possible.

PanicAtTheDiscLo · 01/04/2020 19:40
