Handing it over in a Dettol wipe seems a plan.

As for the horror that people tip delivery drivers - I do. Not frequently but when I’ve bought lots - Christmas or similar.

OtherVoices · 28/03/2020 09:38

I'm going to let DH have this one and not tip! Let's hope the delivery comes now!!

I'm panning to ask them to leave it outside - will talk through closed door! I would have put it in the empty boxes but won't do now!

The Dominos delivery guy wouldn't accept a tip the other night and I know under normal circumstances they rely on them to bump up their wages. Doubt anyone else will accept whether they are allowed to or not.

Hoohaahoo · 28/03/2020 09:43

You’d be better off donating it to a food bank or homeless shelter. The delivery drivers actually have a well paid job.

Hoohaahoo · 28/03/2020 09:45

I’m not being arsey by the way. Just there are lots of people who have lost their jobs that would benefit from your money more.

Dita73 · 28/03/2020 09:53

I totally get why you want to tip,as I want to do the same. Just probably not a good idea right now. Don’t take any notice of people who want to have a go at you for being kind. You were just trying to think of a safe way to do it,nothing wrong with that. Best wishes to you

Well, a LOVELY smiley delivery driver came!
I waved and smiled at him through the window and stayed inside so he could put the bags at the door.
He waved and smiled again when he left.
Wish I could have tipped!

I don't tip drivers in normal circumstances but have the last couple of deliveries and the tips have been accepted with thanks.

strawberrylipgloss · 29/03/2020 15:07

Send Tesco an email and hopefully they'll pass on your comments to the driver. I bet he'll appreciate the positive comments during this time.

SurpriseSparDay · 29/03/2020 17:54

Not wanting to piss on your chips more than I already have, but there was a headline earlier claiming a taxi driver has died after catching the virus from a passenger's cash ...

ilikemethewayiam · 29/03/2020 18:02

My DH is a Tesco delivery driver. They are not allowed to accept tips. They can be disciplined or dismissed if they accept. They are also not allowed to carry any personal cash on them in case they are accused of stealing from customers houses. It’s in their contract. He said it’s nearly always the elderly who try to offer him tips and he doesn’t like to refuse outright so tells them to donate it charity on his behalf.

Haveitheright · 29/03/2020 18:08

employees cannot accept tips or any gifts. If found out can lose there job

^this. So if the driver accepted a tip and was found out he would face a disciplinary. It’s easy to say no one would find out but if you got a different driver another time and they mentioned it to someone they could be fired.

DuckonaBike · 29/03/2020 19:51

I asked the Sainsbury's driver if he was happy to accept a tip in cash. He was. He had gloves on. Easy enough to quarantine cash and use it a week later I would imagine.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 29/03/2020 19:55

I gave my Sainsbury's driver £5 last week - he didn't want to take it, but I said he deserved it!
