To use washing up liquid and shower gel as soap

So we've finally run out of soap in the house, the last bar dissolved down the sink this morning.

So, I know they aren't as effective in killing germs, but as an alternative until I can get my hands on some soap and/or hand sanatiser, would I be OK to use shower gel and washing up liquid as an alternative to soap?

I've got old shampoos that I bought and didn't like that will be re-purposed.

My cosmetic hand creams weren't really cutting it with all the sanitiser - I got a tub of palmers cocoa butter original formula at the weekend, takes a while to rub in, but very effective.

Of course. It’s soap.

LittleLittleLittle · 23/03/2020 11:59

@Jupiter15 you are not wrong.

One of the big things people ignore is the rubbing motion that gets rid of the dirt and other things like bacteria on your hands. That's why they do those tests and you can see where people haven't rubbed even though they put soap all over their hands.

The Dartmoor Soap Company is lovely & will post out to you.

Yes, good idea. Any soap I'd use. Were nearing the end of the handwash in our house and we will move on to shower gels etc.

Also, reccommendation- body shop banana butter is amazing. I've been putting it on my hands a couple of times a day x

The encouragement to buy bar soap rather than liquid soap is because you get far more usage out of bar soap. It's also cheaper!

The wilkos washing up liquid is really gentle on hands. It smells nice too.

Thank you everyone for the replies and advice.
It was my birthday in February so I've got loads of body wash and moisturisers in the house 😁

The hand sanitiser is literally for when I'm walking the dog and clearing up his poop, I use it to give my hands a basic clean and then a proper wash when we get home.

Virus is not bacteria. It does not need to be anti bac soap to work. Washing up liquid will break down the lipid layer, possibly better than soap does. You are not just washing off the virus you are killing it.

We’re using shower gel from Aldi, as there was no hand wash x

It doesn't need to be anti bac soap. Covid 19 is a virus. Not a bacteria.

I remember a few years ago my mum said that my shampoo was amazing and her hair looked so shiny.
I asked her which shampoo she meant. The one with the pink label.
Intrigued I went to look.
She had used the dog shampoo.
I think the whole family teased her for weeks.
Anyway off thread but made me smile remembering and I hope you do to.

I’m confused..
How have you run out of soap if you have washing up liquid and body wash?

😊

Stinkyjellycat · 01/01/2021 19:12

I once watched a programme about people who obsessively clean their homes. A scientist came round and took swabs from round the houses. The cleanest ones (by that I mean the ones with the lease bacteria) were the homes of people who cleaned the surfaces with washing up liquid and hot water, not those who used other cleaning products like acid, bleach etc. Based on this, I am not sure why they would be any less efficient are killing germs than normal soap (but I’m no expert).

Anyway, YANBU.
