So, I've been using a gaming website for a few months to the point of addiction.
However, the staff and other players are rude and mean.
(Googling the site, you will find pages and pages of people quitting the game because of this)

I'm thinking about quitting too.
Would you? This is where I would like the advice.

Why should I continue to support a game where I don't feel welcome and get treated badly?
On the other hand, I'm addicted and enjoy the actual game itself.

It you think the right option is to quit, how can I stop myself logging on?
It's been my life for the past 4 months that I don't know what else to do instead.

It sounds like an abusive relationship with a shit partner that you stay in because "you love him".

Try to see how you're being exploited here. Perhaps that will help you quit.

What's the game? Do you have to play with the other people?

I was a bit like this with Facebook. I only have close friends/family on there and enjoyed seeing what people were up to but there were so many negative things going on that it just started grating on me.

I changed my password to something random that I knew I'd never remember and logged out. My account is still there if I want to look at it but it's been 4 weeks and I still haven't been arsed to go through email verification and password reset etc.

I actually feel much better now!

Being addicted to anything isn’t healthy. Block the site from your devices and take a break from gaming altogether. Reconnect with real people and situations.

Obvs don't know the site but I quit a forum I was fed up with once by going into change password and then mashing the keyboard randomly and not not even looking - so I then had no idea what my password was. Not foolproof, but it was enough for me at the time.

That said I am addicted to this place :(

The game has a forum and I'm not forced to communicate in there but at the same time I feel as if I am.

You can trade items and game money with other players which generally involves making a thread on the forums.

I think I really want to quit, but I'm stopped by knowing how much time I've already put into the game and also not knowing what to do instead. If I had something else to replace it with, I guess I would go cold turkey.

Normally you can make contact with the game ‘owner’ (absolutely the wrong name but no idea) and request they ban you

The first part is what they call a "sunk cost fallacy". That time is gone, never to be recovered and of no value going forward. As to what else to do, learn to bake, go for a walk, take a zumba class. There's a whole off line world out there. Or find something that interests you on line that doesn't cost money and isn't as addictive.
