To cable tie my neighbours side access gate closed??!

All the time it smacks into the fence then frame, whack, whack... proper heavy wooden gate smacking into wood and also a big metal latch clashing on the rebound to the frame.

In this wind it’s ridiculous. Multiple loud smacks a minute.

It’s got a latch, but they are seemingly incapable of using it. I’ve been round before and put the latch down, and it stays shut fine. I don’t know how they stand the whacking against their side wall, at least it’s the other side of the alleyway to my house- so not physically connected. They tend to pop in and out though, two flats worth of people, then leave it open again straight after (one smokes outside a lot so it’s never closed long).

I’m sitting here wondering if cable tying it would make a point? Or a sign realistically? They can access out the back or front just as easily, gate at one end of the alley way to access the side door, open at the other end. Ive mentioned it in passing . I’ve already actually walked over in a ratty mood as he’s smoking next to the gate, put the latch on and pointed it out. He’s an eejit who just laughed and says ‘oh, this is my property, shall I just walk into your garden?’ While laughing at his wit. He’s affable enough but seems to not get at all conversation...

Or just unscrew the hinges and leave it on the ground...?

They sound lazy. So I’d probably unscrew it under cover of darkness in the hope that they’re too lazy to put it back on. Unless they’ve got CCTV.

MintyMabel · 09/02/2020 21:03

My neighbour’s gate does this. I usually go out and put it on the latch.

UpsideRound · 09/02/2020 21:06

@DukeChatsworth I like your thinking...

Can you prop it open with something , a brick , lump of wood , slates that have come off some poor buggers house .

Should u not try having a polite word again?
Rubbing next door neighbour up wrong way may not b best idea unless u really have to.

thenightsky · 09/02/2020 21:15

My gate has been doing this in the wind because the fence moves away when the wind blasts hard and the bolt pops out of its housing, despite DH going out and closing it shut and even padlocking it about 20 times today. Nothing to do with laziness!

It shouldn’t if it is in proper working order. Fix it.

DateNovice · 09/02/2020 21:36

No don’t cable tie it, what happens in the event of a fire and this is their only escape?

They will know it is you, just go and ask again or do something to fix the issue if they refuse to deal with it. It would annoy me too, but cable ties aren’t the way.

millerjane · 09/02/2020 21:37

Are you in Berks?

Honeyroar · 09/02/2020 21:37

Could you nail a little strip of old carpet in between the two pieces of wood that slam together?

If not I’d go with the undoing the hinges screws so that the gate falls off it’s hinges and cross your fingers they don’t put it back up!

Itwasntme1 · 09/02/2020 21:50

I agree don’t cable tie it. Wedge it open with a brick.

malmi · 09/02/2020 21:55

I think that cable tieing it open if you can see a way to do it would prevent the noise and if your neighbour is lazy enough they will not have any need to undo your work.

UpsideRound · 09/02/2020 21:57

@malmi that’s the obvious I’ve missed isn’t it 😂

Would a gate self-closer help?

StoneofDestiny · 09/02/2020 22:42

Big sponge on the bottom to muffle sound?

justilou1 · 10/02/2020 02:29

Put a sign on it that says “SHUT THE FUCKING GATE PROPERLY YOU ARSEHOLES!!!”

TheBewildernessisWeetabix · 10/02/2020 02:40

My suggestion, like malmi, is to tie it open.

Nitpickpicnic · 10/02/2020 03:13

Tying it open as a first option.

Second option- welding it open.

Third option- welding it shut.

Innocentinfamy · 10/02/2020 04:35

Oooh I'm so place marking! I shall be back for this!

Likethebattle · 10/02/2020 07:00

I feel your pain, my neighbour does this. The parking spaces are at the back so they come into the house via the back door. As they go through the garden they just leave the gate swinging in the wind. At least the friggin wind chimes disappeared (I was going to make the ‘disappear’). In the high wind I like to sleep in the back room as our room is in the lift and is really noisy. All I can hear is bang, bang, bang, clang, bang, bang......
