Cafe drama

I was in a local cafe today, very busy and only one table left - a table of four. So I sat there.

A party of four people came in and they had nowhere to sit. One of the women gave me a glare and said how selfish I was to sit there. I said when I came in there were no other tables! She then started whispering to the other people about me and loudly said they were going to a better cafe without rude people or something.

As a person dining alone should I be meek and humble and not go into busy cafes or something? Or jump up and prostrate myself when a bigger party come in? I would normally sit at a table with two chairs if I’m ok my own.

I hope you told them you were saving the seats for Birdie Friend and he wouldn’t be pleased if you gave them away....

PlomBear · 05/02/2020 19:19

Maybe I’ll get Birdie Friend to sort them out?

I think you were fine if there were no smaller tables available.

It is annoying, though, in a not very busy cafe to find all the 4 seat tables taken up with a single person spreading all their stuff out, while the 2 seaters are empty. I notice that happening more often, probably because more people work from cafes, so perhaps they thought you were one of those?

Dumdumdumdidly · 05/02/2020 19:27

So they expected you to leave the coffee shop so they could have your table? Haha! What idiots!

Mlou32 · 05/02/2020 19:28

Rude cow. Her, not you! What are you supposed to do, stand and drink your coffee in the middle of the floor just in case a group comes in and wants to use the table?

I hope you stretched out, waved and grinned manically as she and her coven left.

DingDongDenny · 05/02/2020 19:30

So rude - in a busy cafe I wouldn't mind if people asked to share my table, but to expect me to give my seat up for them - no way!

Heronwatcher · 05/02/2020 19:31

When the party of 4 came in were there some 2 seaters free? If so I would probably have offered to move (both to be kind and smug afterwards!). If no then YWNBU, if yes I think you were a bit.

PlomBear · 05/02/2020 19:32

In the past, I have happily shared my table with other people.

As always in life, I give way to other people but it’s never returned. Such as stopping to let people pass etc. Never get any thanks for being nice.

OP posts:
PlomBear · 05/02/2020 19:32

And no - no two seat tables became free or I would have moved!

Best not to make eye contact with these CFs

PlumsGalore · 05/02/2020 19:45

You should have invited her three friends to share your table :-)

HeresMe · 05/02/2020 19:48

Fuck that shit , I go in pub I sit at a table for four as it's a nice table, first come first served.

Every so often someone wants to join my table I'm happy to let them.

Elieza · 05/02/2020 20:09

Ah birdie friend, how I’ve missed your thread. Must look for it again....

You did nothing wrong OP. They are just a bunch of ignorant baggages.

Thefaceofboe · 05/02/2020 20:13

You would only of been unreasonable if there was a vacant 2 seater table.

AdoptedBumpkin · 05/02/2020 20:14

They sound like the sort of customers that the staff wouldn't want.

FredFlinstoneMadeOfBones · 05/02/2020 20:30

Of course you're not being unreasonable. If two people had come in it would have been polite to offer them the spare seats but since there were four of them what were you meant to do? Just leave?

Naa29 · 05/02/2020 20:35

There was no smaller tables left, you were there first. YANBU.

ALHanes2 · 05/02/2020 21:07

A firm stare whilst mouthing “f*ck you” is how I like to deal with such openly rude people. Why the hell is it your fault the cafe didn’t have any free tables?

cstaff · 05/02/2020 21:11

Rude obnoxious fuckers.
