Emergency contraception advice after ovulation

OctopusTea · 01/02/2020 08:47

Name changed

DH and I had a slipped condom last night.
Planned to go get the morning after pill today (have never taken it before)
However I track my cycles and I ovulate today and reading how it works it doesn't look like it would be effective ?

Does anyone have experience of this or have advice of an emergency contraception that would work after ovulation.

I have three kids already and had very hard pregnancies and there is no way I can physically or mentally cope with being pregnant again so I am starting to freak out a little.

Morning after pill will not work if you have already ovulated. There’s also certain ones that you can’t take of your above a certain weight.

If you've likely already ovulated, you need to get an emergency IUD. This should prevent any embryo from implanting. Google for emergency contraception IUD locally.

I have searched and can't find any information as to where I could get an IUD the family sexual health clinic is closed until Monday morning and even there advice line is closed (I thought this was crazy surely they would get a lot of calls on the weekend ?!)

If I take the MAP today can I still get an IUD next week if I can manage to speak to someone and figure out where I need to go ?

I am not a daft teenager and I am really struggling with the info online and any clear direction of where to go for advice in my local area ! I imagine a young person in crisis being very overwhelmed.

You do have up to 5 days to get an emergency IUD, but I wouldn't dally if you can help it. Is there anywhere you can call, say a local Marie Stopes? Or you could try NHS 111? If not, MAP now and emergency IUD on Monday sounds like a plan.

DressesWithPocketsRockMyWorld · 01/02/2020 09:39

Can you give 111 a call? I know that in my area we have emergency sexual health clinics on a weekend.

Hope you get it sorted ASAP.

Good luck OP

Nogoodusername · 01/02/2020 09:48

The exact same thing happened to me. The emergency pill is not effective if you’ve just ovulated. I had to get an IUD fitted - needs to be done within 5 days. It was not easy to find somewhere that would be able to do it in time

VisionQuest · 01/02/2020 09:51

I was told by a pharmacist that the MAP also prevents a fertilised embryo from implanting. Therefore is effective after ovulation

You can get emergency contraception from a&e.
Call 111
You can get it 5 days post intercourse.

OctopusTea · 01/02/2020 11:56

Thank you all. I have been and gotten the MAP
Had to also get a double does as have been taking St John's Wart. I couldn't make this up what a nightmare.

Will try 111 and see if I can find anything over the weekend for IUD if not will call Monday .

Need to go to a trampolining party now 👍 My dad gets better and better.

Hey @OctopusTea i know this was a while ago but did anywhere exist that you could get an emergency iud over the weekend? I don’t understand why this service doesn't seem to exist!
