Playgroup - yes or no?

Would I be unreasonable to take my DD to playgroup still? She's had a cold for the past week and is on the tail end now but still sounds terrible. I've taken her to the drs and they said she's no longer contagious. I've kept her in all week and feel it's such a shame to miss this too.
I'm worried about the awkward feeling of other parents thinking she's fully germed up.
I've already paid for the class and can't get a refund too.

Really don't know what to do and it starts in less than an hour!

How does the doctor know she's no longer contagious?

Birdyfly · 29/01/2020 08:30

Because she's had the cold for a while now and theyre usually only contagious for the first 5 days max - or so they said. She's got no temps, no snotty nose or anything and is well in herself. Just the cough is still there.

Sorry, but I think you should keep her at home. When my son was small the locus GP insisted he only had a cough, not whooping cough, and could go to school. You can guess what happened!

Birdyfly · 29/01/2020 08:37

Ah ok. I won't take her. Typical she caught the cold there in the first place lol

Dont take her. she might not be up to it anyway. But also it's not fair to spread that around. The other parents wont know the ins and outs of her being sick, but it might piss some off bringing a sick child there.

Seeline · 29/01/2020 08:43

Oh for goodness sake toddlers would never go anywhere if you waited for every sniffle or cough to disappear!

If she has had the cold for a week she won't still be infectious. If she is behaving like her normal self, no temp and not lethargic she certainly hasn't got whooping cough. If she's up to it, go.

Birdyfly · 29/01/2020 08:44

I'm not taking her. I just wasn't sure what the etiquette was for how long to leave these things. Another kid last week turned up with conjunctivitis and another with snot but no one batted an eyelid!

I run a baby class and if someone has an active illness we ask them to stay away. So any fever, sickness, loose nappies, chicken pox etc. If it’s ‘just’ a cold and the child is well in themselves then it’s fine to attend. If she’s not running a fever and she’s well In herself, then I’d have no issues.

Birdyfly · 29/01/2020 08:45

Ahh thanks Seeline. That's why I was unsure.. she is completely normal in herself and happily running around. It's literally just the cough lingering but I worried about people thinking I'm a bad mom for taking her. Just having a rough time of it lately and can't think straight to be honest.

Of course you can take her if you want to.

Birdyfly · 29/01/2020 08:46

Thanks UnicornPug.

I'd go, it's only a cold, there's always at least one kid covered in snot at everything we go to!

YappityYapYap · 29/01/2020 08:49

A cough can take a while to go away. She is over the cold and not snotting everywhere so I would take her.

If you were to keep her off everytime she gets a cold until the cough part is away, she would be off a lot. A cough is not contagious, it's just something that hangs for a while after a cold or flu

CatsCatsCats11 · 29/01/2020 08:50

Don't stay away just for a cough that could last a while longer yet, encourage her to cover her mouth when she coughs.

Willow4987 · 29/01/2020 08:53

I’d go if it’s just a cough! My DS had a nasty cold before Xmas for a couple of weeks. But the cough was hanging around for ages after...I still took him places! Especially as he caught it at nursery in the first place!

MindyStClaire · 29/01/2020 09:00

Take her! It's only a cold, a medical professional has said she's not contagious. If we stayed home every time DD had a cold or cough we'd never leave the house. Go, enjoy the class.

If she has a temp, D&V or is unwell in herself then keep her home. Otherwise, business as usual.

Spam88 · 29/01/2020 09:02

Coughs can linger for weeks after a cold, id definitely take her. Although I'd also take her when she was snotty if she was feeling well enough, because toddlers are snotty about 70% of the time anyway...

TheTrollFairy · 29/01/2020 09:03

My DD (and the whole of her nursery) would never be in if we had to keep them off for a lingering cough. They can last weeks

MoonlightBonnet · 29/01/2020 09:03

It’s just a cough. Half of the other toddlers there will have a cough, they just do at this time of year. Don’t miss playgroup for a cough or you’ll end up never going anywhere.

Birdyfly · 29/01/2020 09:04

Ah thank you for all your replies! Like I said I've kept her in while she was going through the worst of it but she does seem much better apart from the cough.
