Hi everyone!

Bit of a back story I had a child who is currently in jail and won’t be coming out any time soon.

My child has told me he is ashamed to be carrying his dads last name and is getting bullied about it at school. His grandma is against this but I don’t think I’m in the wrong here as it is affecting his mental health.

I want to change his name to my last name and although his dad would probably agree I do have a few questions

Will I need to attend court if I do it through deed poll?

Will I need the father ID?

Will he have to be present with me during any of this?

I would really speculate any advice or experiences you have.

:)

you might need fathers permission if he'son birth certificate, other than that speak to a solicitor for advice as yours is an unusal situation.
gm will have to suck it uo and mind her own. your ds welfare trumps her family name.

A child's legal name can easily be changed by Deed Poll providing everyone with parental responsibility (PR) for the child consents to the name change. If your child is 16 years of age or over (or approaching their 16th birthday), they must apply for their own Deed Poll for which parental consent is not required

Just took me 60 seconds to find this on the U.K. deed poll website! Looks like it won’t be a problem as long as your dc’s dad agrees to it.

Of course YANBU to do it - your child wants it changed and it’s understandable.
