Just wondered what you all put in it to give it more flavour and also to bulk it out to make it go round more.

OP posts:

Worcestershire sauce is just ¼tsp to give a depth of flavour.

Whiskeychaser · 21/01/2020 21:56

Don't always put it (Worcestershire sauce) in, so it's optional, rather than necessary.

Notlonely · 21/01/2020 21:58

Mince, garlic, mixed herbs, soy sauce, bit of sugar, Tom puree, black pepper.
Tinned tomatoes, mushrooms, a red a green and a yellow pepper. Tin of carrots and onion. Flipping lush.

milliefiori · 21/01/2020 21:59

Loads and loads of veg. I add a finely chopped carrt, onion and stick of celery, then chopped red and orange peppers, mushrooms and courgettes, tinned tomatoes, tomato puree, garlic and herbs, beef stock, a splash of red wine and sometimes a splash of worcestershire sauce along with browned minced beef.

mytypeonpaper · 21/01/2020 22:00

Whiskeychaser · 21/01/2020 22:02

Also the longer you cook it for the better, imo. I will often leave it on the stove on a v. low simmer for 6 hours.

PixieDustt · 21/01/2020 22:16

My friend adds marmite. I hate marmite but in spag bowl it was actually very tasty.

PixieDustt · 21/01/2020 22:16

Bol*

BlouseAndSkirt · 21/01/2020 22:32

I got suspicious somewhere around chopped pineapple

What do you mean? Pineapple chunks are an authentic Italian ingredient. I have seen it on pizzas!

BlouseAndSkirt · 21/01/2020 22:34

I’m going to try Worcestershire sauce in my pineapple upside down cake now.

SheChoseDown · 21/01/2020 22:37

Much to my disgust my partner puts bacon in. We made a chilli tonight which will last a few meals with onion and carrot and kidney beans.... And fuckin bacon

SheChoseDown · 21/01/2020 22:40

Omg marmite in spag bol. Yes!!!!!!!!!

MiniGuinness · 21/01/2020 22:44

Yes to milk.
White wine not red.
Beef, pork and veal.
I also love chicken livers in mine.

billy1966 · 21/01/2020 22:47

@SheChoseDown

If he insists on a bit of pork added, suggest some sausage meat. You could use some good quality herby sausages. Mix it in with the mince, you won't notice it.

Also, I always add some red currant jelly or raspberry jam, a heaped tablespoon in and a shake of cinnamon into the mince, carmelised onion, grated veg, wine, passata, tomato puree, garlic, black pepper, bay, oregano.
Prolonged low cooking is key.

Watchagotcha · 21/01/2020 22:49

Good grief. Having read this thread, I’ve changed my mind: Brexit needs to happen - the sooner the better.

Excitedforxmas · 21/01/2020 22:51

I buy a tray of roasted veg and purée it into it. Loads of hidden veg

PrtScn · 21/01/2020 23:19

Passatta
Tomato pureé
Garlic
Onion
Oregano
Mince

I hate mushrooms, otherwise I’d probably use them. Never thought to use carrot or spinach. Might try and sneak some in next time.

NoraEphronsneck · 21/01/2020 23:21

I use a carton of V8 vegetable juice instead of tinned tomatoes.

Celticrose · 21/01/2020 23:21

Worcester sauce
Pesto
Red wine when nearly ready

19lottie82 · 21/01/2020 23:23

Grated Parmesan cheese.
Paprika
A tsp of sugar to neutralise the acidity of the tomatoes.

bestbefore · 21/01/2020 23:27

Grate courgette and carrot into mine. Also tin of anchovies! And sometimes some redcurrent sauce

JaceLancs · 21/01/2020 23:32

pancetta
finely diced beef
onion
garlic
tin of chopped tomatoes
white wine
tomato puree
dried Italian herbs
mushroom ketchup
black pepper
splash of milk
(there should probably be some carrot and celery in there too, but I can't be arsed)
simmer for ages

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/01/2020 02:31

I'm with the anchovy people. Adds umami and anchovies are an oily fish, so healthy!
