A cold and work

Slazengerbag · 20/01/2020 16:24

I’m off work today with a horrendous cold. It started last week and has got progressively worse. The weekend was a write off as I had no energy to do anything. I spent most of my time asleep. I got up this morning for work and a usual 30 minute morning routine of shower, make up dressed and hair left me breathless and exhausted. I called in sick to work. I have spent the day in and out of sleep. I ache from head to toe and it took me 20 minutes to get up and down the stairs to the toilet as I hurt so much. I feel so breathless. I’ve gone through a box of tissues today alone. My eyes are streaming, my head feels like it’s going to explode and my voice is coming and going.

I’m not saying any of this for sympathy it’s just how it is.

A friend text me a few minutes ago asking if I wanted to go for dinner tonight. I explained I was off work with a really bad cold and she sent a laughing emoji with the words a day off for a cold, REALLY?

Was I unreasonable for not going in? Will my employers be thinking the same?

If it's that bad are you sure it's not flu?
Get well soon!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 20/01/2020 16:27

Yanbu.

She probably just thinks bad colds are sneezes and blocked nose.

Chochito · 20/01/2020 16:27

Your friend is a dick. Get well soon and don't spread germs around your workplace.

WombatStewForTea · 20/01/2020 16:27

@buddhababy2019
Flu is not a bad cold Hmm

Slazengerbag · 20/01/2020 16:28

@buddahbaby2019 I’ve never had the flu thankfully but I thought (we’ll from reading on here) that I wouldn’t be posting on here if it was the flu. Apparently you are that poorly you can’t move to use your phone and if there was a £50 note on the floor you wouldn’t get it. It might take me a while but I would bend down and get it!!!

Perhaps she thought it was banter! A bit like when people say their other half as 'man flu'! I'm sure she didn't meant to upset you. YANBU to not go in if you are feeling awful Flowers

Stressedout10 · 20/01/2020 16:33

That's a really bad cold. If you had said flu people would have sympathy but a cold nah, they forget that a cold can be as bad or worse than flu just like flu can be so mild you don't even know that you have it.
Have Brew (lemsip) and a box of tissues from me

goodgodingovan · 20/01/2020 16:37

There are different types of colds and different types of flu and they all affect people differently.
Your friend is rude.
Ps you could have a flu or you could have a really bad cold.
Either way you're not fit to work and no one would want to catch it from you anyway.

buddhababy2019 · 20/01/2020 16:42

@WombatStewForTea At what point did I say it was? A lot of the symptoms of flu however are like extreme versions of a cold.

Urkiddingright · 20/01/2020 16:47

It sounds more like the flu from your description. I’ve had bad colds but none that wipe me out for days, make me sleep all day and ache all over. I only felt like that when I had the flu.

I would raise an eyebrow at someone kissing work for the sake of a cold but yours honestly sounds like flu.

QuestionableMouse · 20/01/2020 16:49

The symptoms sound more like flu to me. How's your temp? Mine was really high with the flu which I don't get with a cold.

steff13 · 20/01/2020 16:55

People say that, but it's not true.

ChasingRainbows19 · 20/01/2020 17:00

I rarely get ill I'm talking once every couple of years I'll get a cold or a cough virus. But I can get a cold that wipes the floor with me like that. I never get a sniffle but I get a full blown no energy snot fest for a few days. Get well soon.

Friend should be thankful you aren't sharing your germs. No point going out when ill better to be home and resting the worst bits. You'll get better more quickly in the long run.

MrsPMT · 20/01/2020 17:02

Thats either a very bad cold, some kind of sinus or chest infection or flu. Doesn't sound like a normal cold at all. Most people IMO do go to work/ out & about with a cold. Flu can also really vary and isn't always the can't get out of bed type.

Agree with others, how has your temperature been? High temps/cold sweats also more likely flu.

crystal1717 · 20/01/2020 17:30

You have flu. I had acute pneumonia from flu, where I was hospitalised and I still would pick up £50 note.
Flu isn't a rare mysterious illness, people get it all the time but it can be dangerous.
Take care and tell friend to fuck off.

Biancadelrioisback · 20/01/2020 17:35

Some people are really weird about colds. I find that if I take a day off when I have a bad cold, I recover much quicker and am more productive in the office. If I drag my arse into work everyday, not only do I spread the cold more, it takes me longer to recover and I end up doing a so-so job.
So I opt to take the day off. My colleagues however will come in and I'll always end up catching it. If they just stayed home we would all be a lot healthier.

FWIW OP, it sounds to me like you did the right thing

ClientListQueen · 20/01/2020 17:39

There's an awful virus about, I was ill for 2 weeks and off work with it. It wasn't flu but it was more than a cold, everything left me exhausted

Slazengerbag · 20/01/2020 17:52

Thank you for the replies. I don’t feel like such a dick for ignoring her message now.

I do have a temperature. Cold and flu capsules are bringing it down slightly but not much. I’m not sweating though. I don’t feel cold or shivery just a bit warm.

It could be one of many strains of flu (not all of them cripple you) if you have a high temperature and body aches.
