Went for my mammogram last week now that I'm turning fifty. Got a letter today saying I need to go for further investigations. I'm worried sick obviously. But the thing is, I have examined both breast very carefully and I can't feel a thing.

When I was 25 I found a lump which turned out to be a fibro adenoma and was removed. Then 12 years ago I felt a tiny lump, was referred, and it turned out to be just gristle. Can't even feel that though.

I am on my period at the moment, and have slight breast tenderness but that's all. Feel fine otherwise.

I'm trying not to panic or obsess, but I'm really struggling. My appointment isn't until Thursday.

Oh lovely, if it is something surely it’s better that it has been found? You need to be really kind to yourself for the next few days. Use you expensive bath products, watch your favourite tv programs etc. In short nurture yourself and try to keep calm. We are here for you x

lashingsofcustard · 11/01/2020 19:44

I've had the same scenario.
Have had 2 x fibroadaenoma removed and went for a mammogram at aged 50 and was recalled. I felt no lumps, Turns out I had a calcification and they did a biopsy and put 'markers' inside my breast so that future mammogram can pick out the area. Apparently it's quite common. Mine wasn't cancerous.
The worst thing is waiting for the results. Try not to worry OPFlowers

You are not unreasonable to be worried but hopefully everything will turn out okay for you. Try to relax and do things you enjoy, in the meantime, to take your mind off of it for a while.

peaceanddove · 12/01/2020 10:11

It's the waiting that is so draining and hard to bear. I have my appointment on Thursday but I don't suppose I will get any answers then. It says on my letter that I can phone and speak to one of the nurses but does anyone know how much they can tell you?

Try not to worry. I was recalled after my first mammogram. They did another scan, thoroughly examined my breasts and finally said that all was fine, there and then. There are often areas that need further examining as this is your first scan. Since then I have had another four scans and never been recalled.

feetfreckles · 12/01/2020 10:55

Same as ginger, recall on first one only.

BlueJava · 12/01/2020 11:00

Don't panic! I can see why you are worried, but please don't be over worried. I had a mammogram was then called back in for further investigation 1 week later, then the next week after that (so 3 appointments in all). I was absolutely fine. Just because they want to see you again doesn't mean there is a problem there - but you just need to get it checked out. Good luck!!

peaceanddove · 12/01/2020 11:13

Thank you so much ginger giraffe that's very reassuring to read.

Just to post an update. I had a reassuring chat with the nurse at the breast clinic who told me the mammogram had shown up some micro calcifications, that's all. But they always need to double check them even though they're rarely a problem.

HolesinTheSoles · 13/01/2020 10:56

Great update OP. I was about to say that it's almost always nothing but great they're following up and making sure.

peaceanddove · 13/01/2020 10:58

Thank you. I am feeling very much relieved and trying very hard not to go breast microcalcifications incase I see anything that scares me again.

Oldraver · 13/01/2020 11:01

Try not to worry too much, calcification I was told are usually innocent

Only thing I would say is they leave behind a metal marker, I was told this would happen and didn't have time to process it. I wish I had refused now

Procrastination4 · 14/01/2020 14:03

That’s great news, peaceanddove.

peaceanddove · 14/01/2020 17:26

Can I ask why you wish you hadn't had the metal marker oldraver?

Thank you procrastination. It's not 100% a reprieve, but I feel much more optimistic about everything.

Both my colleagues got called back after their first mammograms and both turned out to be nothing. If this is your first then it's not uncommon to get a recall as they have no previous scans to compare against. If you don't have to have a biopsy then you may well get your results the same day. I hope all is ok for you OP.
