To ask which is the best alternative to milk?

I'm a vegetarian and curious about reducing my dairy consumption. Or full disclosure, I'm not going to classify myself as vegan because I wont be. I buy eggs from a farmer who has truly free range hens and doesn't cut off their beaks etc and I plan to continue buying/eating them. I also will probably occasionally eat cheese. So not ethically vegan but curious. I'm not a fan of soya and only really have milk in tea/coffee and recipes. Which alternatives have the best/closest taste to milk?

A very slight pea taste, I would say

I'm not vegetarian or vegan but I drink Oatly milk it is the best non animal milk as far as I'm concerned.

VirtualHamster · 11/01/2020 17:18

Oatly Barista is not gluten free in the UK for any coeliacs about, I was once accidentally poisoned by a colleague.

Nudged by a comment upthread about Good Hemp Barista, I found this:

www.vegantradejournal.com/good-hemp-releases-new-barista-milk/

...
Not only is hemp milk good for our bodies, but it is also good for the environment too; Hemp is the most sustainable alternative dairy available as it actually absorbs C02 while it grows, making it a carbon-negative crop. One hectare of hemp offsets a year’s worth of carbon from two cars.
...

(Not got much time for vegan nonsense, but I am a massive fan of hemp Grin)

I’ve just had to put my 3yr old on Oat milk. Her favourite is Oatly whole, the fridge carton not the UHT on the shelf one.

furrybadger · 11/01/2020 17:28

Definitely oatly I don’t drink normal cows milk now just this

lljkk · 11/01/2020 17:31

Which one is highest in fat? That's the problem I find with fake milk products. Way too low fat. yick.

laudete · 11/01/2020 17:31

I neither like nor drink cow milk. On that basis, I would say neither soy nor coconut milk tastes like cow milk because I drink both of those. I guess this is more "what I don't recommend" for you. :)

Bubblysqueak · 11/01/2020 17:37

Depends what for. I have a dairy allergy so have tried all alternatives.

-soya for cooking ( usuallyYorkshire puddings and fake cheese sauce, if I use almond they don't really rise)
-almond for cereal (ds prefers soya)

Hate oat milk.

I use the unsweetened of both types.

Equimum · 11/01/2020 17:44

We use Oatly barista and semi. Visitors tend to be surprised by how nice it is, and we haven’t had anyone say they cannot drink it, unlike when we had soya (no gluten-free visitors).

Keepmewarm · 11/01/2020 17:46

Almond milk for me!

MerryDeath · 11/01/2020 17:47

Oatly i am told. i keep meaning to try some. i like all the nut milks too I'm not fussy tbh.

FthisS · 11/01/2020 17:48

Cashew or alpro growing up milk (I've never actually tried cows milk)

BaolFan · 11/01/2020 17:49

Another vote for Oatley oat milk - we get the 100% whole carton which is usually in the chiller next to cow's milk.

I like almond milk but don't drink it due to environmental reasons and the damage it does to bee stocks (BIL is an apiarist).

BaolFan · 11/01/2020 17:50

Oatley also do an oat creme fraiche which is very nice.
