To not want to sit in the dark?!

I’m not sure whether this is actually normal when watching the telly and maybe I’m the unreasonable one?

DH likes all the lights off if we watch telly in the evening. I prefer to have a couple of lamps on but he always turns them off, it drives me mad, it feels weird to sit in the dark! Perhaps if watching a horror film or something but not for the news or a soap.

We visited MIL the other day and she was sat watching the news in the pitch black and didn’t turn the lamp on even when we sat down to chat.

Whose weird, me or them??

Them.

Aquamarine1029 · 10/01/2020 21:04

Neither one of you is "wrong", but there needs to be a happy medium to accommodate you both. Perhaps changing the bulb in the lamp closest to you with a lower wattage would satisfy both of you.

goodwinter · 10/01/2020 21:04

They are! Pitch black is wrong. Big light is also wrong. Lamps or other soft lighting are the only acceptable answer imo.

ShinyMe · 10/01/2020 21:04

I'm the only person i know, apart from my parents, who have the big light on all the time. My parents only actually have the one main light, they don't do lamps at all. It never occurs to me to turn off the main light.

Halloweenbabyy · 10/01/2020 21:05

You. I must have lights off to watch anything. Lights off, black out blind down, curtains shut. I do suffer from migraines so that does play a factor.

nocoolnamesleft · 10/01/2020 21:05

Depends. If it's a ridiculously darkly shot instalment of GoT, then YABU. For most stuff, YANBU.

Whatsername177 · 10/01/2020 21:05

You. I like the dark! Or candle light.

Newmetoday · 10/01/2020 21:06

I always watch a film or box set in the dark. It’s more cosy. Not normal tv though

AriadnesFilament · 10/01/2020 21:06

They’re weird. YANBU

BlueEyedGreeness · 10/01/2020 21:06

Watching tv in the dark gives a better atmosphere but it gives me a headache too so 🤷🏼‍♀️

Whynosnowyet · 10/01/2020 21:07

Buy yourself a miner's lamp..
Are they tight gits?

DappledThings · 10/01/2020 21:08

ShinyMe Me too! I hate lamps, I find them faffy and pointless. Big light all the way for me.

Our lounge is in two halves. To watch a serious film we might turn off the big light in the TV half and just have the big light in the bit behind us on but never for normal TV and never no light at all.

TowerRavenSeven · 10/01/2020 21:08

I love to watch tv in the total dark. I do it IF dh isn’t around, he hates it! So we compromise with low lighting that I wish wasn’t there and dh wishes there was more of!

ZoeandChandon · 10/01/2020 21:08

They are.

Fairylea · 10/01/2020 21:08

Them.

lostsoulsunited · 10/01/2020 21:08

Either is fine but compromise is essential - turn off the main light and have a lamp for you to read by or whatever.

AllergicToAMop · 10/01/2020 21:08

Switch a place with him. It's possible the lamps reflect from his point of view

goodwinter · 10/01/2020 21:09

@nocoolnamesleft Good point! Revise my earlier answer: anything really atmospheric requires lights off.

Sakura7 · 10/01/2020 21:10

Them! I hate watching TV in the dark, much as DP tries to get me to.

HalfManHalfLabrador · 10/01/2020 21:11

I’m the one who likes the dark or a very low light in my house. He would happily sit under 2 x 100w lightbulbs all evening which just gives me a headache or makes me anxious.

Vagndidit · 10/01/2020 21:12

DH and I frequently clash over this one as well. I'd quite happily sit in complete darkness, where as DH needs the harsh overhead lights on any time he's watching TV. I thought Christmas was a nice compromise. The tree added a nice, soft bit of light--but it wasn't enough for him. On went the overhead lights.
I should also add, he has something against lamps, and side tables to put them on, etc (he's cheap, basically, and won't spend any more on decorative items than necessary...)

tequilasunrises · 10/01/2020 21:12

Interesting, a mix!

Given the state of things watching the news in the dark seems appropriate.

EggysMom · 10/01/2020 21:14

My DH is a lights off merchant, I do find the lounge terribly dark but he did let me have an adjustable reading light which - when I'm very annoyed - I'll put onto full brightness!

longtompot · 10/01/2020 21:21

We have all lights off for watching a film, but side lights for most of the time.
