Noisy Eaters and Slurppers

PanamaPattie · 09/01/2020 18:56

Two new colleagues have started this week. Both of them slurp their teas and coffees. One eats an apple with their mouth open and they suck up the juice and crunch their way through the fruit. The noise is making me stabby.

WIBU to tell them to eat and drink elsewhere or should I just put up with the noise?

Get some ear plugs

mrsbyers · 09/01/2020 19:46

Get over it , I’m sure you have irritating habits

possumgoddess · 09/01/2020 19:46

I have TWO like that in my office. I never knew it was possible to slurp a clementine. One sits right opposite me, she eats crisps with her mouth open and slurps soup EVERY DAY! I can't wait to retire....

Whynosnowyet · 09/01/2020 19:47

Practice your resting bitch face.

cybergran · 09/01/2020 19:49

you are the one with the problem, not them...

so you should move away from them..

Elouera · 09/01/2020 19:49

My MIL talks with her mouth full. Not only can you not understand her, but food often falls out whilst she is speaking!

I'd say something to your colleagues, but in a joking way like:
'Is there a reason you slurp it like that? lol' or lol' are you trying to be the loudest in here' or I've never seen anyone slurp tea like that!'.

Sexnotgender · 09/01/2020 19:50

Wear headphones.

I used to work beside a guy who ate his apples like that, then he’d take a massive bite of his sandwich and try and start a conversationAngry

Putkettleonlove · 09/01/2020 19:50

I feel your pain. Look up misophonia. You are a fellow sufferer from the sounds of it 🤯

chipsandgin · 09/01/2020 19:51

All the ‘it’s your problem’ & ‘get over it’ comments clearly don’t have any experience with Misophonia!

Worth a read. I feel your pain OP.

Whynosnowyet · 09/01/2020 19:52

Unless you work in a cave with cavemen surely manners are the bare minimum to expect in a public place?
Grim.

TheGrump · 09/01/2020 20:10

Since hitting my late 40s this sort of noise really gets to me. I think it always mildly irritated me but these days I have an almost physical rage reaction to it. A man starting loudly sucking a boiled sweet in my train carriage the other day. I had to just get up immediately and walk to a different carriage. If legal and morally acceptable I would have punched him in the gob. Hell has no fury like a peri-menopausal woman listening to noisy eaters.

You have my full sympathy.

Sexnotgender · 09/01/2020 20:11

You’d think so wouldn’t you... according to some posters up thread it’s the OPs issue for being bothered by it rather than the filthy ill mannered trolls she works with.

HundredsAndThousandsOfThem · 09/01/2020 20:12

Oh god why can't people just eat politely? It would make me super stabby. I'd have to put headphones on and glare at them!

cybergran · 09/01/2020 20:18

filthy ill mannered trolls...??
that's a bit harsh don't you think?
all they are doing is eating their lunch and drinking their tea

its the op who is ill mannered... after all, s/he has started a thread about people who are not here to defend themselves. and s/he acknowledged she is the one who is "stabby"... whatever that means... intolerant maybe?

Namestranger · 09/01/2020 20:20

Resign. You'll murder them otherwise.

Instagrump · 09/01/2020 20:20

In Scotland they call it "smacking" and that's exactly what I threaten my beloved husband with every fucking meal! He will not fucking stop making disgusting chewing noises with his gob open every meal. I love him to the ends of the Earth but there have been times where I've ended up screeching "SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT THE FUCK UP!"

I may possibly have misophonia. If you chew with your mouth open, I have probably thought about your death.

Mary1935 · 09/01/2020 20:27

My friend eating habits are poor. I call her a cement mixer - you see what she’s chewing and she will occasionally talk too.
I sit sideways when I’m with her these days.
It’s not pleasant.
I used to slurp me tea!!! My brother looked liked he’d kill me so i stopped!!

MolyHolyGuacamole · 09/01/2020 20:29

Forget not having experience of misophonia, have none of you exclaiming 'get over it' any experience of manners? How have these people been brought up to think that this is acceptable?

ALLMYSmellySocks · 09/01/2020 20:31

You eat like a pig don't you? How do you think internet forums normally work? Isn't every single post written from the poster's point of view about people who aren't there to defend themselves? Eating loudly is not polite and irritates people.

StoneofDestiny · 09/01/2020 20:40

Gross behaviour - how unlucky to have 2 people without table manners in the same place.

IceFran · 09/01/2020 20:51

It's absolutely disgusting, and I have to endure it in my office too.I started a conversation about my son's table manners the other day ( he is only 3) in front of my slurping colleague in the hope that she would check herself, it didn't work.Everyone just rolls their eyes when she sucks on her never ending boiled sweets. In my experience,it's best to just go for a walk.

Fidgety31 · 09/01/2020 20:57

Yeah have misophonia and have to eat alone or in a very noisy environment.
I could fly into a rage otherwise as eating noises ( as well as other sounds) are unbearable for me

amusedbush · 09/01/2020 20:58

One of my colleagues eats an apple like someone is going to take it away from him, furiously chomping huge bites like a horse.

My other colleague insists on drinking his tea scalding hot so he slurps tiny sips over and over Angry

I have misophonia and I often have to ‘go to the loo’ when they start up.

Namestranger · 09/01/2020 21:07

it didn't work

I literally watched the episode of How I Met Your Mother where they inform Lily she's a massively noisey eater with my housemate who I can usually hear eating salad through two closed doors. Didn't register with her one bit!

MolyHolyGuacamole · 09/01/2020 21:33

Not only does my flat mate eat noisily and with her mouth open, she also hums when she eats and licks her fingers with the most noisy enthusiasm. We used to work together and a colleague told me she saw her lick 4 fingers at once then put her hand into the fruit that was for sharing. Dragged up.
