To think Christmas has made everyone grumpy?

I am sure that a higher number than normal threads on mn have decended into the most viscious bun fights over the last week or so. A variety of topics with posts that are just nasty and cruel, seemingly for the sake of it.

AIBU to think something about the festive season has left people lower on empathy than normal?

Stress, emotional ups and downs with family and not enough fresh air probably.

CakeandCustard28 · 06/01/2020 11:15

I think it’s the stress of having to spend time with people you wouldn’t usually on top of that the added stress of cooking for extra people, the never ending of “I have no idea where the f^*! this is going to live”, and the kids being grumpy and tired from being out of routine. I’m so glad Christmas is over personally. 😂

Thescrewinthetuna · 06/01/2020 11:16

Yeah it’s the stress of having to spend time with people you low-key hate because they’re family. Sends people a bit nuts.

TheyAllFloat · 06/01/2020 11:18

I think you might all be right. I love Christmas but this year was super excited to put everything away again and get back to normal.

Ah well, it'll be spring soon enough I suppose!

I think it’s also something to do with the amount of new ‘netmum’ style posters. So many ‘oh sweetie/lovely/darling’ posts, it understandably gives people the rage.

GinDaddy · 06/01/2020 11:20

" A variety of topics with posts that are just nasty and cruel, seemingly for the sake of it."

I agree with you.

Yet we are always told

"AIBU is not a place for the faint-hearted"

"If you want nice chat go to Netmums"

"I miss our lovely nest of vipers"

etc etc..

Twas always this way sadly; some people love to give a good kicking to other people under the cover of it being a forum with robust opinion.

GinDaddy · 06/01/2020 11:22

Haha I posted before I even read @fraggot - was only a matter of time before the predictable "nethuns" stuff started coming in.

Being polite, civil or expressive doesn't mean you're simple minded. Writing a "x" after your post doesn't make you "lower class" or not right for Mumsnet.

Fraggot · 06/01/2020 12:19

It is annoying though. Very Facebooky. ‘You ok hun? x PM’d you x’

Fraggot · 06/01/2020 12:20

But the viper and ‘in the old days’ references are equally as annoying.

DecemberSnow · 06/01/2020 12:22

I think people are bored.

Kids driving them mad or maybe they just need to get back to work....

Although, there are alot more keyboard warriors around....

Freddiefox · 06/01/2020 12:26

I think there is a degree of nit picking of the op’s. Either the op is accussed of drip feeding or having too long an opening post

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 06/01/2020 15:24

I thought boasting about being "a nest of vipers" was an appropriation of the insult that used to be hurled at Mumsnet and turning it around into a joke.

Icanflyhigh · 06/01/2020 17:56

There have been a lot of very 'snippy' responses over the last few days, many of which have made me Hmm and not bother to reply.
Post Christmas blues?

Given the state of international affairs and the fact that Trump is barely lucid or responsible for his actions, it seems a little unfair to blame Christmas for our mental states.

BorneoBabe · 06/01/2020 18:12

Everyone is broke, the weather is shite, and a large number of us have to go back to work in too-tight trousers after two weeks of gorging ourselves. What's not to be cheery about. Grin

TheyAllFloat · 06/01/2020 18:32

With a name like @flouncyfanny I wouldn't epect anything less than grumpy!! Grin

I'm glad it's not just my trousers that need letting out Grin

A LOT of people are dieting, giving up smoking, doing dry Jan. shit weather, empty bank accounts and peaking January separation/divorce rates ... need I go on Grin.
